Theme of the Month for November 2017: One Row Tunes
« on: October 31, 2017, 09:51:17 PM »

We've done this before a few years back, but I think it's worth a re-run. Any tune played on one row on a melodeon, not necessarily on a one-row melodeon; i.e. you can restrict yourself to using 1 row of a 2 row. Does that make sense? Some great examples of one-row music from the English, Irish, Cajun, Quebecois, and lots of other traditions (Markku Lepisto's recent one-row work is amazing for example). Anything goes really!

Cheers,

Clive

;D  ooh lovely .... A local side has just started teaching sword dancing at a village Primary School, I've been roped in as a spare musician, and apparently there are some one row melodeons hiding in a school cupboard so if they're playable and any of the children show an interest I'll be practicing some of the suggestions and seeing which ones they enjoy and hopefully tempt them towards trying the melodeon ....  :||: :|||:

Slightly indulgent, some Olde English twiddlies leavened by a conversational Irish jig, all chestnuts in season.

PS there seems to be a YT copyright claim, not sure for what, so may be ads attached, not my doing.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm? Are they hiding from the Melnet vultures, perhaps? Whereabouts, pray tell?

"High on the moors"? I could bring along Dr Watson with his trusty revolver, we'd skulk through the morning mists etc etc.

Seriously though, it would be sad to think of them slowly deteriorating if they aren't going to be put to good use. That being the case (?) surely it would be better for them to be released into the community, where someone could breathe some life back into them? (I'd be game to have a go!)

Nice! That's got a big sound, you must feel somewhat dwarfed by it's size.
Is it difficult to play such a big box?

Yes, three times through the tune was quite enough

As Facebook keeps reminding me, it is the third birthday of my 4 Stop One Row in G, constructed with my own hands in Stowmarket on Emanuelle Pariselle's course (an experience to be highly recommended).

So to celebrate, here's a very rough run through of one of current favourite one row tunes - the Duke of Marlborough, a polka from the playing of Katie Howson and undoubtedly Suffolk players before her :)

Very nice Andy  (:)
I remember the Witney workshop with Katie where we learned that tune. It seems a long time ago now...

Here's a one-row tune I came up with earlier today, which I've called Crackling after a bowl of yummy crackling the fair Liz made earlier :-)

https://youtu.be/Uin6EjCX8Bw

You lot of musicologists will undoubtably notice whole bars lifted from other tunes in there; there's definitely a couple of bars of Dave Whetstone's "Sweet Ginger" in there, and possibly a bit of Andy Cutting's "St Michaels Mount" too. Oops. I think there's possibly a finite series of phrases you can use on these sort of tunes :-)

Played in D on a Robert Boutet 1-row.

Here's a tune from Sweden, also on a Welty 4 stopper, Midsommarvakan, (aka Swedish Rhapsody) by Hugo Alfven.

Hey!
This one is not freshly made but I'm not sure I can do something new this month. And I haven't posted for a long while and it makes me sad that I'm not involved! (:) So here you go Shropshire Militia Hornpipe https://youtu.be/DhYrkyuTu0E

Two sets:
Music Hall tunes - played on a G Hohner 4 stop bought by me in 1978 and still going strong!
https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/music-hall-medleymp3
Cyril Pearl's Hornpipes - two of my favourite East Anglian tunes.
 https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/cyril-pearls-hornpipesmp3

This made a nice change from some of the fancy stuff I am trying to play.
