BTW Tufty
should Cyril be Cecil? (Not Cyril the Squirrel?)
In Australia we had a famous raconteur called Cyril Pearl.
Regardless of the name, you play the hornpipe beautifully.

Here's a one-row tune I came up with earlier today, which I've called Crackling after a bowl of yummy crackling the fair Liz made earlier :-)

https://youtu.be/Uin6EjCX8Bw

You lot of musicologists will undoubtably notice whole bars lifted from other tunes in there; there's definitely a couple of bars of Dave Whetstone's "Sweet Ginger" in there, and possibly a bit of Andy Cutting's "St Michaels Mount" too. Oops. I think there's possibly a finite series of phrases you can use on these sort of tunes :-)

Played in D on a Robert Boutet 1-row.

That's a great tune you've written there Clive, I wonder if Steve_freereeder might read this and abc it . . . Great sounding box too, are the two stops to take out L & H to leave MM?

Thanks Pete - glad you like it! The box is a Robert Boutet in D; a quebecois maker and player who you can find videos of on youtube. He smiles a *lot*! The 2 stops on top are purely for show, and indeed to pick the accordion up by. It's a classic 4 voice, but all 4 voices are permanently on. It's quite hard work to play - harder than a Hohner 4 stop.

Quite right. Details from the East Anglian Music trust:
"Cecil Pearl was born at the beginning of the twentieth century and was in his eighties when we met, played with and recorded him in the 1980s. He lived, worked and played music in the villages north-west of Ipswich. His working life started on his father's farm in Henley, operating a steam threshing machine. He had an unusual repertoire of tunes, mainly polkas and marches, which he played in a rhythmical yet understated style in the key of C on his two-row B/C melodeon. If you were in a pub and walked behind Cecil, with his cap and coat on, you wouldn't guess that he was the one playing the music, as he hardly moved when he played, using the bellows in a very economical manner".

Two sets:
Music Hall tunes - played on a G Hohner 4 stop bought by me in 1978 and still going strong!
https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/music-hall-medleymp3
Cyril Pearl's Hornpipes - two of my favourite East Anglian tunes.
 https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/cyril-pearls-hornpipesmp3

This made a nice change from some of the fancy stuff I am trying to play.
Fab. Really evocative.

Also Tufty, meant to ask about your melodeon. It is noticeable how smooth the sound is. No clicking of keys or any other extraneous sound. Might just be your superior technique of course.
Thanks

Albert Farmers Bonfire Tune - this is the original version . As played by Albert himself on the Boscastle Breakdown LP.

In my humble opinion it’s a much more interesting tune than the ‘messed about’ version that most people play now , which was probably invented by some band or other and sold on a CD .  ;)

I think it’s always worth listening to the original source when it’s available

Another original version that’s better than the more commonly played version :

https://youtu.be/dNB4aOAiI3o

Tiger Smiths jig, usually called Oscar Woods jig - but as Oscar played it, and as transcribed in the Hardcore English publication . It has some great  syncopation at the end of the A part , and in the B part .

The version that’s usually played is the Old Swan Band version , which for me loses the essential character of the tune and Oscars playing of it .

See what you think !

Another one learned from the playing of the great Oscar Woods - if you’ve never heard him play then you need to ! Recordings of his playing are on various CDs, but I was lucky enough to hear him play live.

The Italian Waltz - this one deserves to be played in more sessions .

‘When Sheapshearing’s Done’ played on an antique toy one row. I learned the tune from the Dorset Trio’s playing on the Boscastle Breakdown LP

A great schottische learned from the Ramsbottom Band , I think it’s Danish.

Note the absence of ‘melodeon face’   ;)

A medley of snippets from East Anglia, with the generic title of ‘Pigeon on the gate’.
I think I learned it from the radio way back in 1976 !

Played on a Hohner 4 stop in G

;D  ooh lovely .... A local side has just started teaching sword dancing at a village Primary School, I've been roped in as a spare musician, and apparently there are some one row melodeons hiding in a school cupboard so if they're playable and any of the children show an interest I'll be practicing some of the suggestions and seeing which ones they enjoy and hopefully tempt them towards trying the melodeon ....  :||: :|||:

Is that for Goathland ?
