Also Tufty, meant to ask about your melodeon. It is noticeable how smooth the sound is. No clicking of keys or any other extraneous sound. Might just be your superior technique of course.
Thanks
Tony
Hi,
the hornpipes are played on an "Irish Dancemaster" D 1 row made in Florida by Michael Usui. I bought it used from Rees Wesson. I understand that the reeds are Italian. I have found one video of this model being played (not by me!)
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl37_mJcLGE
Compared to the Salterelle model I had before, the Dancemaster is less hungry for air and more pleasant to play. The website says that they are going to restart making the one row model.

A medley of snippets from East Anglia, with the generic title of ‘Pigeon on the gate’.

I sat next to Oscar in a session when we ran the ECMW in Broseley more years ago than I care to remember..
Enthusiastic audience member "What's that one Oscar?"
The man himself "Pigeon on a Gate..."
"I thought you'd played that one....
"S'nother pigeon on another gate...."

Happy Days.... :|glug

Hey!
This one is not freshly made but I'm not sure I can do something new this month. And I haven't posted for a long while and it makes me sad that I'm not involved! (:) So here you go Shropshire Militia Hornpipe https://youtu.be/DhYrkyuTu0E

I really enjoyed that tune. Love the way you and your fiddler play together as well. I had to go on and listen to a load more of your posts. Best I've heard in a long time.

I can play 12 bar blues on the inside row of my D/G - Stanley and Dora and all that - jazz.

I was simply pottering about and it just happened. Honest.

One more, this time a reel.
Classic Connemara one row dance tune, Johnny Connolly makes this tune look easy and sound great.

It's a song tune! The song was very popular in Suffolk, I remember Geoff Ling singing it ,and in a bid to find the missing lyrics, I have just realised there is a recording of me playing it and my husband John singing it (in 1983!) in the British Library Sound Archive! Lyrics not very PC in places:

Well now we've got a baby and what a babe she is,
Her eyes are green, she's quite a queen, we call her pretty Liz
And every night when I get home me wife she says to me -
Get the perambulator John but don't go far away!

Chorus

Wheel the perambulator John, wheel it nice and slow
Don't get riled, mind the child, careful how you go.
When you turn the corner John, when you cross the road -
Just cock your front wheels up a bit or over goes your load.

Last time I took the baby out I took it in the pram,
I turned the bloomin' thing upside-down, I don't know where I am.
I cracked the baby's head, took a piece out of her nose,
And now I daren't go home for fear of my wife Rose.

Chorus

The other night when we went out, we left the babe behind,
I said to me wife, well I think you're very kind.
But as we were a-walkin' along we met with Mrs Gray,
She had the perambulator and was goin' our way.

Chorus

Now if you've got the toothache, you're suffering with pain,
Don't go to the dentist, for that's a silly game.
............. [forgotten this bit] .... castor oil,
And sit upon the fire a bit until it begins to boil.

Chorus

John never used to sing this next verse (!!)

Well, if you've got a nagging wife, put her in a boat,
Shove her in the sea and see if she will float.
Then you sit and watch her and then you start to think
You take the oars, you row away, you leave the old bugger to sink.

A popular old dance tune played on a leaky old Czech one row which has seen better days but its sound evokes a long-gone era for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udt9bfxhI5E

The Invicta melodeon is about 100 years old and was brought to Australia in 1926. It was played by successive generations and had finally 'given up the ghost' according to Ray Bird, who resuscitated it. The interior timber has warped a bit and the reeds are too fragile for modern concert pitch but its pretty much all original.

I'm playing Sally's varsovienna tune the way its done at our local acoustic bush dance but according to Peter Ellis RIP the varso danced in NSW is a bit different to the way its done down in Victoria. Its a beautiful dance which gives you the opportunity to adjust the phrasing to suit the dancers.

Lovely! Sounds just perfect on that box.

I love that tune too - have played it myself for a while, and a few other people in the UK know it too I think.

Perhaps that could be Theme of the Month - tunes from Australia? OR perhaps it's been done already, I haven't been a regular visitor to this section of Melnet until recently.

Thanks Katie  (:)

With any luck we might get to play it together when I'm over your way in June/July 2018.

BTW Aussie tunes were the theme back in Sept 2016: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,19240.0.html

Morning all

I'm adding this as a final blast on my last remaining one-row - it wasn't intended for the ToTM. I'm not a one-row player and can't motivate myself to become one. Details of featured melodeon soon to be added to the 'For sale' section of forum.

I've been playing one-row a lot recently (not getting any better tho'), partly due to acquiring yet another instrument – a Hohner 114C from Brian of this parish (thank you!).
But I have to say I've felt a touch dispirited by the amazing posts by everyone else – every time I think of a tune to do Pikey posts it.
Anyway here's Redwing – I'm shocked to find it's an American popular song from 1907. I thought it was another east anglian classic that the chaps at morris play.

To be fair, you know you've pretty much got all the notes sorted - the speed and ease will come with practice (fingers crossed).  A month isn't long to come to terms with such an ambitious project.

Still November...
Knoodling on the new member of the fleet, a two stop one row in F, (thank you Brian and Lester). Home alone and knoodling on Dancing Song, (Bob Pegg) and Loveless, which I associate with the playing of Denis Smith who died recently. Slow, steady, rough and ready.

All the best
