Hi all,

I'm just dropping in for some shameless self promotion, I hope that's ok.

I started work on my solo album last week, I've six tracks done. While I was down in Clare I dropped into Custy's Music Shop, where I recorded a video of one of the album tracks, featuring my good friend Hajime Takahashi. I hope you like it :)

My last album is available from http://lukedeaton.bandcamp.com

Luke.

Very pretty. Love your quote from Tony MacMahon: "any music should really come from the heart. Any fancy stuff should come after".

That's not a quote, just me talking about music, I'd say he'd agree though!

Now that tune "The Siege of Guingamp" appears as the first track on The Boys of the Lough album, "Good friends, Good music" - played by Tony McMahon and Barney McKenna. They call it "Breton Wedding March".
Guingamp is in Finistere, Brittany. So, a tune that has marched its way from the battlefield to the marriage ceremony.

I'll rephrase that. I particularly like your statement...
Your playing is a great illustration of that.

It's on "MacMahon from Clare" with the correct title - again played by Tony Mac and Barney. I watched that whole series of "Around Europe with the Green Linnet" programmes on the RTÉ website and I seem to recall, as mentioned in the YT clip, the pair of them playing it there too.

Luke - I find the tremolo on your box just right. How did you tell John Brosnan to tune it? Or did he tell you what he did - cents and all that?

Page of information on the historical events (in French) with, at the bottom, music (and Breton words) for the song!

You can see all the words in Breton next to their French translation by clicking the link "Texte bilingue".

As far as I know it's about +10 0 -10 cents, John used his judgement once I gave it to him. He's flattened thirds in the basses too. I'd say a lot of the sound quality is because it's a very special accordion; my other Manfrini is good but doesn't hold a candle to it. It's definitely the best box I've ever heard or played.

Ah ha, someone else who learnt the 79th's Farewell off Rick Epping ;D
That's one of my favourite tunes, though it's a pain in the arse on a D/G box if you want to play it in A, so I play it on the mandolin. I'll be looking forward to your new album; your last one was a cracker!

I find The 79ths farewell to Gibralter  either  from the pipe music of from Jimmy Shands  arrangement very easy to play in A on the D row of a DG box . Is it Rick Eppings version , which I am not over keen on, that makes it a pain in the arse to play?

You know, it may actually just be that I haven't tried it on the box for a couple of years, but you're totally right George; it's actually pretty nice to play. I just gave it a bash, and it'd be nicer with a half-row/12 basses, but it's certainly doable :)

Please note that the title of the second tune is “The 79th’s Farewell to Gibraltar”. There is no 'Highland Division' in it. It refers to the 79th (Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders) Regiment leaving Gibraltar. There has never been a 79th Highland Division.

Hi Luke

Lovely set. Absolutely loving the first tune - simple, stately and dignified. I may have to learn it.  (:)

Really nice rendition Luke of both tunes!
On the melodeon greats album Peter Wyper plays the second tune which He calls , 79ths highlanders with the champion march.
I really like the 79ths tune, I'm taking another look at it for learning.
Thanks for posting and looking forward to your album.

Although I was born not far from Guingamp, I have never heard that tune so thank you to enable me to discover it.

I have looked for a tablature but don't find much things about it on the net.  Luckily there is this partition so ...  one day, I might be able to do a transcription of it and play this very nice tune !

There's this, found under the name "Breton wedding march" that Stiamh mentioned above

Thank you !!!    I have been trying to find the CADB TAB of that tune but did not succeed.

With that ABC one or the partition you are sending me in that link I should be able to find a way to do the transcription in my system.
