Announcing a day of workshops for DG and one-row D melodeons in Oswestry, Shropshire. We have called it BorderBox as it takes place in Oswestry on the Wales/England border.
The date is Saturday 24th February 2018 at Oswestry School.
The tutors are Katie Howson, Rees Wesson and Tony Weatherall.
Workshops are aimed at Intermediate/Advanced players.
Oswestry is a reasonable sized market town very accessible from all points of the compass. There is a Premier Lodge, Travel Lodge, many B and Bs.  Non playing partners will find lots to do: walking, cycling, shopping, there is even a pub that advertises looking after your partner!
We are looking into camper-van parking.

There is a basic website at www.borderbox.co.uk - the programme in detail with workshop content, costs, directions and admin details will be on there soon.
Currently the programme is, reception, morning workshop, lunch, (plenty of places in the town), two afternoon workshops, time for a meal, and/or a session, then a concert from the tutors with guests.
Peter Morris is admin. There is a contact form on the website. Please record your interest. Full details and costs to follow.
Any Traders who might be interested please use the contact form or reply to rees@melodeons.com

P.S. Beta testing website and FB page - your feedback appreciated, esp. glitches, bugs and other horrid compootery nastiness :)

Thanks. It's all a bit short notice as it's less than 3 months away but Menus will be filled in due course.

Just to say the workshop day is happening, provided there's enough support of course, to date the booking form has been done, the bank account applied for and Rees is working manfully with Tony and Katie on the workshop contents.

Oswestry school has really good facilities, large car park, and Oswestry has enough eating places for everyone. There are lots of B and B, two Travel Lodge and I know one camping van location that even does breakfast, there are others of course.

Rees has suggested a great concert so we are looking forward to a very rewarding interesting and fun day.

Sounds good. With those three tutors, hopefully there will be something for 'one rows' fans!!!!!

Border box day of workshops
« Reply #7 on: December 05, 2017, 10:25:31 AM »

Now that the details are up on the website (www.borderbox.co.uk) I'd like to expand a bit on the theme of the day: that is, playing tunes in the style of their home or perhaps call it vive la difference. I know if I'm not careful I can end up playing a lot of reels, jigs and waltzes in the same way, its not enough just to rely the melody to make the difference. If like me you learn largely from the written music it can be one dimensional. For example, St Lawrence jig, now in a Mally book which I first saw in the Ralph Page Book Of Contras EFDSS publication 1969. I played it for a long time, then Tony Weatherall heard me playing it, and lengthened a few significant notes which changed the tune immensely moving it more to its Canadian roots. Another example is Nancy Taylor's Reel, composed by Willie Taylor, I learnt it out of Robin Dunn's tune book, The Old and The New (Mally). But it's a "dotted reel" ?? I struggled for ages to understand how to"play" this tune, then I heard Willie Taylor play his composition on the CD The Shepherds, and although I had to work even harder to play it in the way he wrote it I heard how it and dotted reels from the north east were intended to be played. Both tunes are examples of needing to learn from a player skilled in the style of the region playing the tune in order to understand how to play the tune
The point and theme of the day is to learn how to play a tune in the style/genre it came from. Though they won't say it themsleves the three tutors are masters of this skill. Their workshops for the intermediates and advanced will be like a master class in understanding the origins and how to play tunes. to bring out the "style". You should leave at the end of the day having the werewithall to improve your playing.

So:
Katie Howson will be on polkas from England, Ireland and Newfoundland.
Tony Weatherall on jigs from Shropshire, Ireland and Quebec.
I will be waltzing in Wales, Northumberland and Louisiana Cajun country.
Steve Dumpleton and Peter Morris are wrangling the beginners.

Concert line-up to be announced very shortly.

Unfortunately, no C workshop for me as we have a band booking that evening and need to get sorted for that.

Even though Andy is only doing A and B workshops I'm really pleased he and Sarah and possibly Richard are coming to support what they can

Just to add there will be a Showcase at the close of the workshops plus in the evening a concert that is shaping up to sound like a very enjoyable time, not to be missed, there's still places available and time to book if you are interested. Cheers

I'd like to go to this :( Unfortunately Taylor's Men are practising in London at 10:am on the Sunday and the estimable Mr Watcham will not be in attendance therefore they have no box player if I skive off *sigh*

Sorry you can't make it Helena, it looks like being a good day. Have fun in that London.

So, a few more participants needed to fill up the workshops and make a real success of the event.

I look forward to meeting some melnetters in person on the 24th.
I'm signed up for Tony's Quebec Jig, Katie's Newfoundland Polka and Rees's Louisiana Waltz.

I'll have my Sag'né one row in D with me which I'm sure will suit all of these but also my Saltarelle D/G just in case.

The number of participants is mounting up, and as such I'm thinking of setting up a session in a local pub on the Friday night (23rd) I know who are coming on the day of course but not when they are travelling, is there any interest in a session for early arrivals? I will ask individually when I send out the tunes but it would be useful to know if any melnetters are interested. Cheers, Peter
