Tune of the Month for December 2017: Midnight on the Water
« on: December 01, 2017, 09:27:09 AM »

Hi all - this month's winner, is Midnight on the Water, a great waltz by Luke Thomasson, a fiddle player from Texas at the turn of last century. Luke was never recorded playing it, but if you want to hear his son playing it, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoIZWBkzxHg . Lovely stuff.

In terms of a demo of this tune on the melodeon, here's Gavin Atkin going through it in detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6IhXeqIsRI and Bob Michel on a C#/D (in D) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qyqhhpxn_SI and yours truly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlCZxrpxDw0 (although I'm playing it on a box with cheat basses of course).

... and of course, it's on Lester's tune a day here: https://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/tune-256-midnight-on-water.html where you can find ABC notation for the basic tune.

Enjoy all,

Clive

I love this tune! My all time favourite version is played by Seb Lagrange. I know he plays a CBA but there is much to learn from this.... https://youtu.be/RsNy75xqc80

There is another great version of this tune played by Remi Geoffroy on an A/D accordion :

Plop, here you go:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIf7EvuDOAE

I've already done this one a couple of years ago on the Mory - and I can't imagine how I'm going to play that better this time - because my playing really hasn't significantly changed in that time, and this tune doesn't take well to minorising it or playing it in a different time signature.

So here's a completely different plan; a Streb generating midi into ThumbJam on an iPad and onto Mixcraft to do the multitracking of string synths, and we're away.

Cheers,

Clive

That's lovely Clive....well done! But it makes me wish again that I hadn't passed on my Streb...ah well, we live and learn....

A bit of foolishness: A short video I made two years ago on the beach at midnight. I'm sitting on a long cantilevered log which allowed me to bounce in time to the music.

My take on this one ( I really need to learn a bass line with this). I learned this one by ear which is something I don't do enough of, I went back and checked the notes after playing though a few times and was surprised I wasn't that far off. Progress (:)
This tune has inspired me to learn Bonaparte's retreat as many videos have the two tunes played together. Could make for a good TOTM if it hasn't already been done.

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!
