BRIAN PETERS MELODEON WORKSHOP & EVENING PERFORMANCE

www.brian-peters.co.uk

Brian Peters is 'one of the country's finest melodeon players' (English Dance & Song 2011) & an internationally-known instrumentalist & singer with a wide teaching experience on melodeon, including Melodeons at Witney, Folkworks, Music without Frontiers (Netherlands) & a Masterclass at the Australian National Folk Festival. He also gives regular lessons to groups & individuals. Working solo & in various combinations, he specialises in Northern English dance music & accompanying traditional song, but has also experimented with blues, Tex-Mex & much else. He is an excellent Anglo concertina player as well.
The workshop will cover three main topics if time permits (see provisional timetable). Players should have a G/D instrument & be reasonably experienced; music will be provided for readers but by-ear learners are welcome too.

Oh, how I wish I could get to Brian's workshop. But the tyranny of distance :(

Mention of old English-style tunes played in the New England region of the US sparked my interest. Are there examples of these on youtube or elsewhere to get some idea of that music?

I don't know if there are YouTubes of this style of music, but I bet the spendid Brian Peters could tell you. Are you there, Brian?

Love to come but sadly I have a clash that day.  Will always try to come to Lewes Melodeon workshops.

The advance music for this workshop will be ready for sending out soon. We still have places at the workshop and tickets for Brian's evening performance at Lewes Saturday Folk Club. He's also doing an all-day ballad forum on the Sunday (Frankie Armstrong is coming as a participant).

Here's one that converts nicely to a melodeon tune - US contradance bands tend to use fiddle and piano primarily, though you sometime find an accordion.

Advance music going out any time now.  Most of it is stuff you won't find on the net.

Roll up, roll up!

The advance music is ready now. I have my eye on the New England tunes and am preparing to nick some, even if I am a concertina player. Last time Brian was with us I made off with the beautiful Sourgrass and Granite (Brian Pickell) which is a wonderful tune and not a flavour of crisps.

Just to say this was a fantastic workshop, as ever for Valmai's Lewes events.  There are many fantastic players around but not all are fantastic teachers too - Brian Peters is one of them. Although it was a full-on day and I have come away with several weeks (if not months) worth of homework I came away with new techniques and at least one tune that is a keeper.  Also good to catch up with Valmai and Bryan - I really don't get down to Lewes often enough.

If you can make the next one - do it.
