painting pallets
« on: August 06, 2009, 08:30:35 AM »

Hi,
I've had the grille off my Hohner 4 stop for a while now and have decided it is time to paint the pallets as they are currently plain wood and don't match the rest of the box at all. I'm intending to use a standard undercoat for wood, and then an enamel paint to finish. From other peoples experience, is this the best way to do it? Any advice or tips? I will be using masking tape to block of the holes underneath so that none finds its way onto the reeds.

Thanks,

Tim

Also take care that no paint gets on the felt and leather under the pallet, not even on the edges.

I would not use house paint for this, its much too thick and messy.  When I've done this before its been when all the pallets were off to have new facings.  I used a spray paint designed for touching up car paintwork.

Ta Theo,
Yes, I was wondering about the felt/leather. What is the best method to get the pallets off? (although I'm not sure I will do this). I'm intending to use a small brush and plenty of caution/masking tape!! I will post a picture if I succeed (and will no doubt be contacting you for a quote for repairs if I don't!!)

The Pallets often come off quite easily if you waggle them up and down a bit on the end of the lever.  Don't force them 'cos the levers bend fairly easily.  If there is a little cloth disc glued on top remove that first.

I usually fix them back on with a spot of hot melt glue on the top of the pallet after placing the lever in the slot.   This is not very pretty if you want exposed pallets.  The other way is to put some glue in the slot before pressing the lever in, but be warned if you use this method you may not be able to get the pallets off again without causing damage

Thanks for all the advice Theo. I still intend to do this but now realise it's going to involve a bit more than getting the paints out! I'm going to think it out carefully first. There is a lot of the melt glue on the pallets already, should this peel off fairly easily or is there a better method of removing it?  Oh, and... there is a lot of slot and a little lever, if I was to fill the slot that stays unlevered I'm assuming that regular wood filler will do? Has anyone out there done this pallet painting before?

If you are in the US

Go to a craft shp and get Delta Ceramcoat  paint      of your choice   use a small brush

I would not use a spray paint

Has anyone out there done this pallet painting before?

I can't say I've ever done so myself, but this guy has, and gone well beyond it: Eezy Squeezy

I only used spray paint when all the pallets were off, and the facings had been stripped off prior to being replaced with new felt and leather.

Thanks Triskel,
that got a laugh out of me at 7 this morning. So, I've taken off all the pallets and am cleaning them up prior to painting with enamel using a small brush. The biggest problem is gatting the old melt glue off, a slow job.
All advice much appreciated, many thanks, pictures in a few days.

There's a Hohner 4-stop in there somewhere...  ::)

And apparently he wants $6,000 for one!  ???

After looking at what he's done to them, that's about $5,990 too much!

I say, anyone for acid zydeco? Mine isn't going to be a bit like that! Do you think he has sold any of those boxes?

I have said this elsewhere  I sincerely hope it was a Chinese made 114

A ruination of an historical accordeon on par with blasterdizing a vintage VW  bug

And as  art.. sorry  no takers.

Self indulgent effort that just screams that the maker sorely needs some attention. ; " look at me"   "look at me"

It seems odd and I cannot believe there is a market out there for that kind of stuff! But then I could be very much mistaken as my teenage son took one look and uttered a worshipful 'wow! I'm still not getting him one!
