Xmas Song suggestions...
« on: December 06, 2017, 08:40:05 AM »

Looking for suggestions for an upbeat, comic song, probably less we'll known, that can be linked in some way to Xmas (e.g. It could mention sprouts, or be about reindeer pooh...you get the idea) and that can be sung with a melodeon, e.g. shouldn't have too many fancy chords or chromatic progressions. I can transpose so it doesn't need to be in D or G. It's for the Andover Lamb Session Xmas party, which is held in the Angel pub  (:) I was going to do one about rum, but this apparently isn't good enough a connection (:).  I've seen one about a Lousy Christmas on YT, but can't understand the lyrics as they are sung in a broad and inpenetrable US accent...

I remember Roaring Jelly from early Sidmouth's around 19777-8 ish.

Yes that is pretty good, thanks (except for reference to Rolf Harris which would need removing or substituting).

There is a 'version' of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen called Auntie Julia which is rather fun - and it can be played on the D/G melodeon if you crossrow at the high end. I don't play the basses so you'd have to see what you can do about them for yourself.

There are a couple of parodies by the Kippers that work with melodeon: Arrest These Merry Gentlemen and the Death or Glory Wassail. I will try to put Mudcat links here, but I am not sure whether they will take you to the song or the whole thread (which might yield other possibilities).

There's also a song called Miss Hooligan's Christmas Cake, but I don't have either the words or the tune to hand. Words may be on Mudcat.

Why not write your own to the tune of a popular Christmas carol?

I'm not sure how known or unknown this is (my knowledge of Xmas songs is lacking), but it is a fun song which I wasn't familiar with until recently, and it is relatively easy to play (~4 chords).

The Shropshire Wakes (Hey For Christmas) (song starts 2:18 or so)

Do you have a Hohner from 1934-1945 with a serial number on?
Send me a private message or comment on the German Accordion Problem spreadsheet to improve the statistics of the project and get an estimate of the production date of the box if it is not known.
