Strobe tuner advice
« on: December 07, 2017, 09:41:43 AM »

I was along to visit John Crawford in Freuchie the other day.
He’d been fine tuning a Hohner Black Dot Deluxe for me. I’ve been chatting to him for a good while about reed tuning etc and he showed me how to use his Peterson SP-1 Strobo Plus HD Strobe Tuner. He swears by it. Is this a good model to buy? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I use a Peterson StroboSoft app on my mobile phone. Theo put me on to it at an event in Aberdeen, where he was doing some on the spot fettling. It's fine for me, but I only use it to check existing tuning, and to tune my guitar. Whether it's adequate for use as a full time tuning tool, I don't know. Theo will be able to tell you. It's certainly a lot cheaper than the one you quoted ;)

Peterson strobe timers are the bees knees as far as I’m concerned. I haven’t tried the one Jim C uses.  I use the iPad version - iStroboSoft.  It is a bit more expensive than other apps, but well worth the extra. There are lots of useful add-ons too.  My only criticism is that the Accordion add on is much too inflexible.

Another vote here for the Peterson iStroboSoft app.

I don't have a mobile phone :o and hence don't use the iStroboSoft tuner.
However, I do use a Peterson VSAM, a free-standing virtual strobe tuner with a liquid crystal display and various add-ons. It has done sterling service for the last 8 years and I am very pleased with it. The StroboPlus HD tuner which the OP mentions is the modern version of the VSAM.

So - another vote for Peterson equipment.

I have a Peterson 450 strobe tuner that i paid about $400 used.  Called to ask Peterson about having it calibrated.  He said about $75 plus shipping, then he asked if I had a smart phone. I had just gotten one, and he said the Istroosoft tuner app was about $5.  I said I didn't think the app would be very accurate.  He laughed and he said more accurate than my machine.  My strobe tuner has been in a box in a dusty corner ever since.

Several years ago I got a Peterson Stroboflip tuner for around £140. A couple of years later I paid a few pounds for the iPhone/iPad app which is leaner, meaner and far more accurate/stable than the hardware version ever was. The layer of dust on the StroboFlip is now thick enough to be measured with a tyre tread depth gauge rather than a vernier caliper!
