Alfred Montmarquette
« on: December 14, 2017, 10:31:35 PM »

I’ve been over-indulging in the amazing mp3 archive http://amicus.collectionscanada.gc.ca/gramophone-bin/Main/RouteRqst?r=0&i=NW_S&l=0&v=1&coll=24&lvl=1&rp=1&t=Montmarquette+Alfred+1871-1944 for the last couple of weeks. He’s a quick player but it’s something to aspire to and I’d like to try some of his tunes.

Does anyone know of a source of ABCs for Montmarquette’s tunes (or any old Quebec tunes)?
I’ve found http://www.mustrad.udenap.org/lerepertoire.html in these pages, but they have only dots and midis. I could cope with those but I’m going to have to transpose them all and abc is easier for me to work with.
Thanks
Steve

This one and probably others on fiddlers companion
MARCHE DU MONT ST. LOUIS.  French-Canadian, March (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning. AA’BB’. Composed by Québec accordion player and composer Alfred Montmarquette (1871-1944), who recorded with his trio for the Brunswick label in the 1920’s. Montmarquette is renowned for his fine march compositions, such as this one, named for a bilingual college in Montrėal.

It would be good if you could search by player on this site, I don't think you can though?
If you know the title your looking for you may find it.

This site has some of his tunes if you can figure out what they are, then search for them.
The first one Irish polka ,sounds a lot like-- My love is but a lassie? Usually played in D, He plays a lot in A.

I have the abc files attached.

quebec.abc is from http://montrealsession.dnsalias.net/listing.php?title=Quebec&book=quebec.abc

Can't remember where I got the other file  :(

The Quebec section of the montreal session website needs to expand. I have many tunes, not enough time to transcribe. If anyone has abc versions of tunes, they can email them to me at robin.beech@mcgill.ca to put them on the site.

If you open a tune on the site, there is an edit link that will take to you the editor where you can easily transpose the tune.

You can do the same thing with any abc you find on a webpage using Jim Hawkridge's amazing javascript bookmark (http://jim.hawkridges.co.uk/projects/abcbookmarklet/)

Thanks a lot folks.
I think I dismissed the Montreal session pages too hastily, as my first search for a couple of Marches turned nothing much up, and at first glance i didn’t see much French language. But yes, I’ll do more searching there thanks.
That mustrad.udenap.org link seems to be the richest source of AM’s tunes, so I guess I’ll have to try and abc them myself. I’m sort of lazy, and am in a decent routine with iPad and tunebook, which gives me all I need with dots and playback to learn the tune. I don’t seem to be able play those midis on the iPad, which means I have to wind up the steam driven computer and wait for it to finish its ten thousand updates by which time I’ll have got involved in some fine tuning of the operating system.....
Anyway, thanks for the links and ideas, that’ll keep me busy for a long time.

There is a book of Montmarquette transcriptions available:

http://crapo.qc.ca/produit/alfred-montmarquette-1871-1944/

I very much suspect this book is the source for the Montmarquette stuff on 'Identitairs' ...

A group of transcribers are hard at work ABCing most of the Identitairs tunes at the moment and we are making good progress. I've done a few Alfred Montmarquette tunes myself but all of the work needs to be carefully proofread before handing it back to the owner of the Identitairs site for it to be included there. I would imagine that they will start to appear in a couple of months time if all goes to plan.

Boxcall: thanks for the tune, I've just dropped it into abcexplorer.
Don't mean to be picky, but in bar 4, there's a 'C' when it should be 'c' in abc notation according to the score on this site
http://www.mustrad.udenap.org/tounes/TQ069_marche_du_mont_st_louis.html
I checked cos it sort of clunked when I played it and it didn't sound right!

I happened on the site after trying to obtain the music for Marche du Deverner ( Devernay ),
here
http://www.mustrad.udenap.org/tounes/TQ304_marche_duvernay.html
which I first heard played by Chris Woods and Andy Cutting on their first release, when they were going through their Quebecois phase. Not only does it have the musical score, but a sound clip of the man playing it, which though crackily is really nice.

I'll be interested to see the results of the learned gentlemen after they've transcribed the cannon of tunes.
Good luck chaps!

Is this traditional music centred in a particular area, or is it played across the country by those so inclined?
Also is the Saint Lawrence river the divide or is some or similar music found in the extreme edge of the US backing onto the Great Lakes or the river?
Just curious...
Thanks

Thanks for the heads-up Pete I'll kepp an eye out. I did a couple of tunes that I wanted to have a go at, and with Syale's tunebooks I have more than enough to be getting on with for now.

I too am ignorant of the geography and the traditional music of french-canada, but from examples and references found here I ended up searching for Philippe Bruneau CD/tracks on the web (of which there seem to be hardly any) and ended up buying a Montmarquette CD instead (it was cheap and for sale..) since then it's not left the player in the car, it has such spirited playing and jolly tunes.
thanks

Hi Pete, I inherited a thick pile of quebec tunes someone else transcribed as sheet music. I've abc'd a few but if I can find the pile, I can send that to your team :-)
