"There's other of our friends, will greet us here anon"
« on: August 08, 2009, 08:36:28 AM »

It's something of a tradition that Internet forums carry some "Measure" of anonymity  My own signin here isn't actually my real name (although you'd be forgiven for guessing it). Now stangely and perhaps paradoxically I was drawn into the forum after spotting my own full name here on google. "Gosh, a thread about me on an internet forum"  8) (OK I'm vain)

But reflecting afterwards - there's something a rather odd that people hiding behind anonymity, might then freely post names and whereabouts, of real people, on something the whole World can read. It's not as if I were some sort of public figure - nor am I the only such 'private citizen'.

I've no complaint, I'm well enough extraverted to not lose sleep over this. But clicking randomly through the 'members' tab it looks like about 1 in 5 of us have utterly uninformative IDs and no profile info. In a community such as this one wonders what benefit that brings. And why hide who you are? It's not as if we were discussing robbery or child molestation (although some awful deprivations have been commited to tunes)!

Well, it's up to you. My own head's over the parapet and I'm willing to stand stand by what I post here.  If people feel too shy to identify - perhaps they might consider saying where they play our instrument (this in 'profile' rather than per post)IMHO a post from Germany has a rather different context from one from the West Coast of Ireland (albeit I've seen flat out Irish sessions in central France)

I hope no one will take offence - this is not Poster specific in any way. Think about it - what are we doing here - and why?

Anon, anon! Come let's away; the strangers all are gone.

I'm known by my web name better than my real name..as when I first started on the internet I was a parnoid youth protecting my identity so I had a psudonym...plus my actuall name is so common if someone shouts out Sarah I will probably ignore it they shout Lady D and I know its me. ;)

If we change our 'names' to our 'real' names do we become a new person as far as the forum is concerned or do drift on but under another flag so to speak?

What's all this about pseudo names? I thought we all used our real names?

Anonymity has it's benefits though I've always used my first name in discussion groups. The thing is that writing on these boards - often without thinking too carefully what you say - gives a certain picture of you to the others. This picture may be good or even better than you deserve but sometimes the opposite. Some years back I posted frequently on a mandolin list - where, btw, ppl use their real names mostly - and felt extremely uncomfortable when I saw some of the ppl later in real life. Several times I have posted on this list during long lonely nights after a glass or two and then afterwards regretting what have said. Well, I'm too old to care that much of what ppl think of me, but after these incidents I sometimes wish I had registerd anon.

I've never seen the name "HallelujahAl" as a common Christian name, that's all.  :P My real name is Chris (as set out in my Profile , but "Ebor_fiddler" came about to distinguish my self from a certain Pete_of_Ebor on this forum. He plays melodeon and I fiddle, to the best of my poor ability. for The Slightly Notorious. However, the pseudonym does help identify me occasionally, especially if I am playing my fiddle AND wearing an Ebor teeshirt! I have now dared to put up a picture of myself and my first box, declaring my allegiance in public!  :||:

You can change your username, but you then also have to get your password reset.

If you want do display your real name its easier to include include it in your 'custom title' which appears after each post, or in your 'personal text' which appears under your avatar.

These can be found in your profile in 'Forum Profile Information'

edited to add:

just had a look at the new version of our forum software SMF 2.0 which has a facility for admins to put extra fields into personal profiles which would enable those who want to to say more about themselves.

Hard to get any more Christian than Hallelujah I would have thought

Yes, but nobody dare call him "Common"!  :||: (Incidently, concerning my "contribution" above, why doesn't my newly up loaded picture show?)  ???

I've never really seen the point of this anonymity thing - I'm unconvinced that the spamming and identity theft problems would materialise in a forum like this, and presumably if we were that worried about being recognised we would go to festivals wearing false beards for disguises, or something?  (OK, maybe not ladydetemps!)

I'm with chrisryall, so here goes -

It's my real name, I play in a band called Free Range Legs, and we are based around Chelmsford/Sawbridgeworth in the North Essex/Herts area, and I live in the sticks just north of Chelmsford.  We do English/Irish/French/American/Scottish/Polish/Finnish dance music, with a sort of punchy EFDSS feel.  I have two Saltarelle Tramontanes, and my idea is to try to play rhythmic toons with steady LH accompaniment, hence the 14 bass.

I organise a somethingaround session (not just Folk) at the Butchers Arms in North End (South of Dunmow) on the second Sunday every month, and if anyone wants details I'll be delighted to put you on the mailing list.  I also enjoy playing at the Half Moon in Bishops Stortford, and the Old Bell in Sawbridgeworth.  I also play acoustic guitar and bass guitar, and am involved in a new Folk/Blues/Jazz trio called the Sheri Kershaw Band, playing bass.

And I just love Towersey!

I'd be very interested to find out the background and ideas of all you interesting people out there too, because at the moment you appear to me just icons that write!

Regards,

Chris Brimley

There was a thread on this theme, either on the old forum, or at the beginning of this one, encouraging people to use real names, which I did. My usual reason for using an unusual moniker on line is to get a unique id on a system which has already got thousands of them on it. But that didn't apply here at the start.

Gosh - an honesty session! That wasn't in the Grand Plan, but here goes

I'm Chris Ryall (finally breaks cover), medic in Liverpool. In my mid 50's.  Ran uni folk clubs in the 70's and danced a lot eg (founder of Cambridge International F.D.C (still going) 1973! "Dun morris" also (Newcastle, Mersey).  I like French dance most, I've come to see walking it through for 6 minutes, before 3 minutes of dance ??? as a bit sad. But my liking for motor bikes and a careless car put paid to my dance days.

Did loads of Whitby in the 80's, moved on to French festivals when Whitby folded kids facilities in 1990. Deeply into French/Euro by 2000, then refocused back to Britain this decade. Pretty flexi nowadays, but I can be 'a menace' in a session .. departing from the dots!

I'm presently enjoying what our pastorAl member might call "Life after Birth" when my youngest got to 18 :D I travel a lot, generally with melodeon. Somehow I've never done 'Irish', but plan to have a go at Whitney.  Other interests: cards, wine, women and song.

This topic always seems to rear its inquisitive head on just about every message board. Some people seem obsessed with knowing every detail of the lives of others.

I chose a nickname that reflects my love for two harmonicas strapped to a bellows.

I do not use my real name for this reason. I do not want nosey neighbors, employers, and others searching for my name and making judgements about me.

I have enjoyed the typed "conversations" that I have had on this message board.

On other message boards about my other interests, I may use a different name.

I do not want the whole world "connecting the dots" of my every thought about various topics. It is far to easy with today's search engines.

I was having a great time at a certain event until someone stuck a video camera in my face and wanted to put me on "You-Tube". I do not want someone to look up my name and find a mediocre performance that lives on forever on the internet.

That same person was back at a recent event with a video camera on a tripod blocking my view of the various performers, "documenting the event".

I have a lot of sympathy with this view. Why do people with video cameras think that their need is greater than anyone else's and become irritable when they can't get the 'best' view. At Whitby some years ago we were dancing and a videoist asked us to to dance in front of that sailing boat that they have. There was quite a crowd of spectators as well, not what we are generally accustomed to, and the videoist became quite shirty when we chose to dance for the crowd, not for him. A nice bloke I am sure, but he had forgotten that we couldn't give a toss about his need to record this historic event.

The camera person kept changing positions and apparently found that the best place to capture a solo performance was directly in front of whomever was playing.

This person was "documenting the event" for the artsy-fartsy council that helped sponsor the event and actually asked me to relinquish my chair because a certain camera angle was needed.

I finally had enough and sat on the ground right in front of the "stage" for the rest of the show.

Now back to our regular topic of anonymity on the internet.....

I love it when odd videos of me or my band turn up on YouTube or wherever. It's great and saves me the bother of organising all that stuff myself.
If a camera person is in the way and detracting from my performance, I find that a well placed head-butt or a deft knee to the groin does the trick. I can honestly say that I have "accidentally" destroyed several cameras that have been worth more than all my instruments combined.
When there's a Japanese cameraman lying on his back between your legs with his lens pointed up your bellows, it's all too easy to lose your footing.

I don't have strong views about this (the topic, that is, not intrusive cameras).
But I think that, on any specialist forum, even partial anonymity does have something to be said for it. It can mean that all views are assessed at their face value rather than according to whether the poster has more/less extensive experience than others. And as such it can make for a less daunting environment for newcomers.
So I don't think that members should feel pressured into giving personal or autobiographical details, even if only privately to the forum.
