19th(?) century box on ebay
« on: December 27, 2017, 10:59:58 PM »

https://www.ebay.com/itm/i01a21-Altes-Tasteninstrument-Akkordeon-Harmonika-mit-Koffer/112711033568

From what little I know the design seems to be rather olde.
Probably nowhere near playable, but I guess that's not the point here  ;)

Do you have a Hohner from 1934-1945 with a serial number on?
Send me a private message or comment on the German Accordion Problem spreadsheet to improve the statistics of the project and get an estimate of the production date of the box if it is not known.

It’s a French Accordion, often called a Flutina.
Made in Paris in second half of 19th century.  Nicely made thing but very tricky to repair.  Usually has the pushed and pulls the opposite way round compared with melodeon.

This one, with the pallets enclosed, is a true flutina. The ones with exposed pallets, on the other hand, were described simply as French accordions. Both styles were often produced by the same makers, and this one looks very much like it was made by Busson, who was the most prolific of them.

The stop knobs in the end show it to be a 2-voice instrument.

Stephen,  are we looking at the same photos?  I can see a row of circular pads/pallets on each side of the keyboard, or are we using different terminology?

Yes I have looked through all the pictures, but I don’t see any of the treble side that show a cover over the pallets/pads.

triskel, I think you meant to post or link a photo of a true flutina (re: your "this one").

Here's one (from the web):

Indeed so - I can only plead sheer, utter, total exhaustion after being out on St. Stephen's Day (Boxing Day) "on the Wren" in Dingle, in fact I'm still very tired. The weather was none too good though, with rain in the afternoon, a bitter wind, and a fall of sleet at night, which didn't help any, but the craic was still mighty!  ;)

Mea culpa! I think I must have forgotten about the pallets as I scrolled down the other images, and that deep body, with the wavy mouldings, confused me because it's usually to be found on Busson's flutinas, like one I've got here. (I'll post a photo later, but I have to drag myself, on aching legs and feet, out the door just now.)

Whoops!  :|bl

Edited to add two of my photos of the Green and Gold Wren in Dingle, in the fallen sleet, on St. Stephen's Day 2017
