Theme of the Month for January 2018: New Tunes
« on: December 31, 2017, 11:49:44 PM »

New year, new tunes! By which we mean any tune composed in recent times with a known author. You can anticipate a corresponding 'traditional tunes' thread, and indeed it is inbound, but for this month, it's anything that *isn't* composed by "trad", even if that's not very recent at all - Emile Vacher's 1920's repertoire is fair game for example!

Cheers,

Clive

Since New Years Day in Oz gives me a head start on most of you it looks like I'll be the first to post a new tune. But first let me tell you how it came about. My little grandson aged 18 months was randomly pushing the bass-side buttons on my box (as they do while you're trying to keep them entertained) when I realised he was playing the chord sequence to a familiar pop song.

So now ladies and gentlemen I offer for your enjoyment a waltz I've tentatively called The Eagles Waltz. On second thoughts I'll just call it the Hotel California waltz ...

;D

My tune is not really new: It's from 1962 (older than I!). But it should still be recent enough for this thread.  (:)

Played (a bit roughly) on a two-row Weltmeister in C/F.

This is a tune written in 2016 by guitarist Dave Malkin.  I don't think it has a name, but it's quite fun to play.

Excellent tune Pete, I don't suppose you have the dots for it?

Hi Pete.  The dots were included in my original post: called "Dave"  (:)

The tune isn't new, but it's composed, probably 20th century, and not very much older than Emile Vacher so I hope it qualifies.
This is the Dancing Dustman Two Step written by the magnificent Felix Burns. I've been listening to lots of scratchy old records recently and I learnt this from the Peter Wyper recording of 1913 on the Melodeon Greats Topic CD.

New in the sense that we know who wrote it - Chris Wood. It's the North Downs Way from Wood and Cutting's album 'Knock John'.  I've been footling around with this tune for ages. I eventually got so that I could (nearly) play it in D. However the version on the record is in F so I thought I'd give that a try. I've found it excrutiatingly difficult in F and will probably go back to playing it in D and may even post a D version here at some point. I'm aware that it can be controversial to change the key of a tune we know the author of but I hope that Chris wouldn't be unhappy to hear his tune being played in what, for me anyway, is a much more accessible key.
It was shot in the low light of evening hence the graininess of the vid.

Here is a recording I made  7+ years ago....I was going to redo it, but I decided to keep the original. It's a tune composed by Olov Johansson of Sweden, who is a master on the nyckelharpa, or Swedish bowed fiddle. I included guitar and mandolin, also some Gnomes.

Here is my offering.  A waltz by Pierre Ladonne - the son.  It is called ”Fauvette et Pinson”.  A cheery wee tune:

I hope you enjoy it

Very nice in all respects, well played, nice tune, lovely sounding box. Can't see any reason why your style of playing shouldn't cope perfectly with English session tunes.
Good luck and well done.

Fauvette et Pinson:
I have been asked for the music for this tune.  Sorry, no abc

Here is a pdf file of the sheet music.  I have been reliably informed that there should be an extra rest bar between the first and second parts.  I play the extra bar in my version, but it is not on the sheet music.

Here's my second version of The North Downs Way by Chris Wood.  Played this time in the key of D.  Thank you Anahata for the abc for this tune.

What a lovely tune!  My playing has been nearly all French music to date but I am slowly discovering a wealth of 'new' music in the English folk style.  Thank you!

Strange! I don't remember doing that.
I do have the ABC in both keys, so I must at least have done the transposition (with abc2abc)
The ABC doesn't have the usual Z: header with my name and email address on it, and I don't recollect having the album it was allegedly transcribed from, unless it was a download that I've forgotten about. Curiouser and curiouser....
