Some 1930's jazz tunes with bass lines for D/G
« on: January 14, 2018, 09:51:43 PM »

A couple of old jazz tunes using bass riffs that work OK with the standard D/G layout of 8 buttons on the left side. Although we've only got four bass buttons to play with its fun to try out the possibilities. The video doesn't show the bass side too well I'm afraid.

Christopher Columbus is the first tune, followed by Puttin' On The Ritz from 1927.

Fantastic - Don't they swing nicely!

(I remember looking at Putting on the Ritz some years ago, but not persisting sufficiently with it)

Really good stuff! I love when people break from tradition and play stuff like those.  The only problem is I just can’t hear Puttin on the Ritz without seeing Gene Wilder and the monster....

It’s a blessing and a curse

Oh dear, for me it was Fred Astaire. Showing my age! Anyone remember Harry Richman in 1930?

Don't Peeping Tom play this as a set with 42nd Street?

Presently working up Cole Porter's "let's fall in love".  (Should I mention that I'm dating a Finn?) 😉

A lot of 30s stuff has quite complex chords, but it is amazing what is to hand, even on 2 rows.

For example in E minor the ii chord of a ii-V-i progression is F#m7,b5. Sounds intimidating … until you discover that F#, A, C and E are simply adjacent pull buttons on a D/G's inner row 😎

Go for it.! I am in company just now but will check Smiley's video later. Have enjoyed all his other stuff 😀

Ed: They've gone: That syncopation on the Ritz tune was particularly cool, and might I say … a skilful modulation between the two pieces. Not easy!

Thanks guys!

Using 3 or 4 note right-hand chords (either along or across the rows) on the D/G opens up all sorts of new musical vistas when playing jazzy stuff. I seem to remember Chris Ryall designed a system to identify right-hand chording options. If its still available for a standard D/G or C/F keyboard, Chris, I might be able to apply it a bit better now.

cheers, Ian

It goes by the non cryptic  ;)  URL

    https://chrisryall.net/chords/

Just checked and it is google searchable. Needs an update to bring in more HTML5 stuff but it will still find your chords. C/F is available as a preset, but you can also type your layout into the box and press [!] to "build" it.  Rodec notation for a button is eg 2F, 2F# or 3Bb, with the leading digit telling the script what octave it voices in. You can leave the digit out if all you need is chord search

NB Voice octaves start at A. Sorry, but that was the lowest note on my Gaillard.

You'll need to copy/save that to a text file at present and paste back in, but I'll link in HTML5's localstorage when I get back from Spain; It now works in every browser except Safari

Don't press the Ryanair button!

Thanks Chris - I was able to use it straight away. Now I'll have to work my fingers into various contortions using the accidentals etc.

Don't press the Ryanair button!

Is that a dare?  I don't know if I can stop myself now ...
