No Love for the C/F ?
« on: January 15, 2018, 02:33:51 PM »

I understand that Milleret/Pignol use C/F acc and Andy Cutting and a few other luminaries here on MelNet such as the honorable Roland Carson do use C/F systems.

Other than specific locations, such as the Netherlands, why is the C/F system not more popular?
I quite like the tone  and timbre of the C/F.. almost as much as another not so popular system, the Bb/Eb.

I have owned a couple C/F boxes such as a Corso , a Pokerwork and Overture IV, The Corso and Pokerwork ended up being used   for conversion boxes. The reason I bought them... cheap. I paid $35 for a Corso in excellent condition, $175 for a Pokerwork and $300 for a beautiful Overture IV.  They were far less money than buying the same box in more popular key systems such as D/G or G/C.

Just curious if others have, and use, and appreciate the C/F .

I seem to remember Pete Coe plays an old Erika C/F too, and very effectively. I quite like them too, but find F a tad too high for my vocal range, such as it is.

I have an old Hohner C/F Club II (still in club tuning, but reedwork fettled by Theo for the previous owner) and love it to bits for its sound.
There are several appearances of it on my YouTube channel.

Lots of tunes on my shelf in those keys and I wouldn't mind getting a C/F for easy playing - if I can find enough pennies in the piggy-bank - or if I could bear to part with one of my other ones...(Don't suppose anyone would like a Gremlin four stop one row 'Cajun' - in C...)
Also, interesting comments re song accompaniment-  not that I can sing at all.

There used to be lots of Hohner C/F Clubs cheap as chips on German eBay. They tend to get snapped up by UK fettlers, declubbed and retuned to D/G.
Now there are not so many, and they aren't so cheap, but still good value. And Club tuned, but that's not a bad thing, in my book.

I have a Sander in CF which Rees converted for me and a old Club also in CF and I love them both. The Sander is my box of choice now. I find CF sits in the right place for me. ( Although I'm quite fond of a pokerwork AD which I have.)

For that very reason..I just got a D/G Erica..don't like it at all(sound) but it's a lovely responsive  nimble player..

Yes, A/D is my favourite. It sits by my desk ready to play at a moment's notice.

I also like A/D and owned a fine Giulletti (sp)  which I bought new.

Back to C/F....   Hrumph, Hrumph.

I believe one of the Blustein Bros played Cajun on a C/F Pokerwork.

Exactly so. Very useful for playing with a hurdy gurdy in a D tuning.

Frederic Paris also used a CF on a lot of his recordings. If I owned one I would happily play it.

Lets hope when I go that all the old keys are popular , so when my collection sells I have left an inheritance.I have about 60.All in tune and Pitch . Mot Fc and flats. The club system is quite interesting. I am trying to master Fc and gc basically C as home key and play G from C as easy as G and D.havent got much further,Dont mind any swaps.I do find a need to keep changing as any key begins wear and a change is as good as a rest. Playing solo helps.

Yes - another vote for the C/F tuning. It's nicely mellow and great for singing with.
I have a Erika 2.4 row in C/F, courtesy of Mike Rowbotham, which is a really nice instrument.

As with others here, I find that the key of F suits many of the songs I sing, so my 1929-ish C/F Hohner 19 button pressedwood tends only to be used for song accompaniment. Ditto my F/C Morse Ceili anglo concertina, but that's another story....

I find my CF Lilliput essential for French tunes, to fit in with hurdy-gurdy keys. It gets at least as much use as my GC.
