Beilbe's Hornpipe, The Marmalade Polka, The Dark Island
« on: January 19, 2018, 09:50:48 AM »

Here are three more tunes played at tempo and then demonstrated slowly for learning from the regular and free Horsmonden workshop. If you're a new player or an improver, check out the playlists on my YouTube account - there may be something there you have been wanting to learn... Recent tunes covered this way have included the good starters' tunes The Hullichan Jig and Kafoozalum, and Inisheer, which gives a nice easy introduction to using chords beyond the usual three...

Another tune follows in the next posting below...

Have fun, please let me know if you find this stuff useful and consider coming to a workshop if you're ever nearby. We're a friendly lot and it's always good fun.

Hello Gavin, Well I find your postings very useful, and I'm going to learn Inisheer and now Dark Island.

Thanks very much.

Hi Gavin, it was good to listen your take on The Dark Island. One of my favourite airs but then it would, having spent my formative years in that part of the country and knowing Ian very well. Up on the north west coast, this tune is played in the key of A. Daniel McPhee of this parish has lovely version on youtube. Almost played like the original.

Thanks folks!

For some reason the usual magic of the Internet didn't work, and there was nothing to alert me to your kind replies.

HavaLaff: I will search for Mr McPhee immediately!

HavaLaff - Daniel McPhee's version is beautiful, and so atmospheric it takes your mind straight to the Hebrides.

There are certainly some thing things to learn from it.

As you'll appreciate, as learned by our workshoppers it'll be used as a waltz at a local barndance in the fairly near future, so I hope you and your neighbours don't mind us using what must ba a local anthem for our own purposes and in our own way...

Btw, my very 'morris' sounding melodeon may not always be the box I play it on!
