is the small stradella bass end required to fit fit a particular melodeon or is it just the bass engine you want to try to adapt to an existing melodeon left side.  also how small eg 12, 24, 32 ,48 ?

I've bought a couple of used Erica bellows & I'm pretty good with most things mechanical with the added bonus of a very well equipped workshop(motorcycle restoration)+ a friend who makes violas with  truly specialist facilities/skills.

I'm going to make up some step/up/down bellow frame convertors. I've dedicated an Erica project as a multi-key interchangeable c/w stradella end so shall be messing about with that idea. All it needs is some carefull choice of quick release multi use fasteners, a run of empty reed blocks, a few breaker instruments for reeds and a wad of cash for mike for any strange tuning combinations that I start to think up..probably a 32 bass end will cover it. may have to buy one of the small Hohner  PA's..any suggestions..??.. I'm new to this so I'm on a steep learning curve >:E

Blimey Byte-of!

you don't hang around!

For a Stradella-end on an Erica, you could either look to use the 12-bass stradella version of the Erica that can be picked up fairly easily on Ebay. Check that it is indeed a unisonoric stradella, because 12-bass melodeon bass ends were also fitted to some Erica 12-basses....

OR...

you can look to use a 32 or 48 bass stradella from one of the similar-sized Piano Acc/CBA instruments.

With these, you could either find an instrument as-close-as-poss in size and simply adapt the bellows/frames.... the cut-and-shut approach (I know this has been done with the Hohner Corona, but there are fewer obvious candidates for the Erica dimensions). The alternative (more fun and MUCh more effective) would be to pirate the action+soundboard+reedblocks from the Stradella model you want, and graft these into an Erica bass-end.

You'd need to assess the case-space available on the Erica and adapt the position of the new soundboard if necessary and certainly adapt the area where the buttons are located. With both of these it's worth having a good think about what type of stradella bass you want ... how many buttons/counterbass?/Diminished/7ths etc etc

If you managed this, you could clamp a range of Erica treble ends on, and virtually play in the key combinations of your choice...

Is that the Erica master-plan? Clamping could be a version of the old Koch swing-hook clamp... easier in the field than friction pins.

I have the bass end of a Hohner Student II piano accordion.  The reed blocks are not in it, but I should be able to find them if that is of interest.  It is quite a bit bigger than an Erica, so the best way to use it would be to transplant the mechanism and blocks into the Erica bass end.  The reed blocks are identical to those in a 12 bass Erica, the mechanism is all the same except the push rods that carry the buttons are a different shape.

Thanks Theo..however i've just bid/won a very nice Hohner student VM PA c/w case in what I suspect a red pearloid that will match the Erica I have..£99.00.. (:).. so I'm sorted..Edit..I'm pretty well decided to go the bellows 'step/up/down adaptor way..it' simple, i've got the spare erica bellows so it will be a stand alone bellow/bass unit ready to have the treble end clipped on and I don't have to butcher the bass end & in this case(no pun intended) it should look right, no horrible 'bodge' job..

Slight thread drift but ... you could also get hands on a Trichord and monkey with the RH, thus ending up with stradella and whatever tuning you want on the right.

That's a fair point and it had not occurred to me. The CBA originally came from Theo but I haven't had the time to do anything with it. ... and probably won't unless someone asks me.

Oh dear ...!!..change of plan..the 'VM' arrived and it's lovely..bellows like butter, keys soft but positive 'n' fast and a french musette to die for, cosmetically it's mint...so my wife's laid claim, beats her weltmiester hands down..shame as the red pearloid matches perfectly but it's too good to mess with. I've also decided it will make more sense to adapt a bass end to fit my corona II's GCF/ADE and I may have a Ab/Bb/Eb coming. So if your student II is hohner red pearloid I'm back looking...

I wonder, Sir John; might you know where such a beast could be found?
