Reed valves - a long strip
« on: January 26, 2018, 02:56:23 PM »

The "technician" in this video is cutting valves from a long strip.
Has anyone here used that material?
Is it any good, and where is it available to buy?
I haven't seen it on any of the online shops.

I suspect that it may be 1/4" magnetic tape. Not ideal!

Proper valves are so cheap it’s really pointless making your own,  unless you enjoy re-inventing the wheel.

Do you mean audio recording tape?
I have heard of that being used in an emergency type situation alright.
The stuff yer man in the video is using looks thicker though... but you could be right.

Agreed. It's just that I thought it was a new product that I wasn't aware of.

It is possible to buy long strips of valve leather from Carini, not that I have actually done that. As Theo says, valves are relatively inexpensive. However, the chap in the video may not have ready access to accordion supplies, and before it was easy to order goods from our suppliers, like Charlie Marshall, I am convinced that builders and repairers improvised with the materials they had to hand.

That must be the item they call "uncutted" on their website, but there is no image
or description of it available at present.
I think it must be what the dude in the video is using.

Whatever he is using seems to be very easy to fit and very effective.

Agree with that Rog. When restoring books, I found some really odd material for the lining of the spines. Obviously stuff just picked up from the workshop floor. Once I even found a piece of vellum with Gregorian chant hand written on it. The British Museum, ( one of my clients) were very interested.
So in earlier times it was normal to improvise with whatever was to hand.

A few of us still do, although we are not professionals. (Eh, Anne Croucher?)
