Tune of the Month for February 2018: Portobello
« on: February 01, 2018, 12:49:00 PM »

The people have spoken!

Last month's runner up again, was Ed Rennie's playing this jolly little hornpipe for us here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_Obnox0pug

In fact, haven't seen this before, but here's Mel playing it much more slowly for learning, and with much clearer sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLuK3sj1lUc

Thanks Mel!

Cheers, Clive

The title's shown as Portobellow (wiv a woubleyou) in the Village Music Project from the playing of William Irwin the (English) Lakeland fiddler.  I recorded it for the ThOTM 'Hornpipes' in March 2013 along with another couple of Wm Irwin tunes.

It's a rainy sunday afternoon, so I recorded this...

Pretty much a straight down the line take on the tune; no frills. Played on a Hohner Lucia in D/G, where you'll notice I'm using a remarkably low percentage of the buttons available to me :-)

It's a showery cold Tuesday afternoon (!) so here's my take

We got to know the Cock and Bull band through festivals and locally organised ceilidhs. This tune was a favourite of theirs, and then ours, it's often heard in our local sessions.

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Nice to hear your playing. I decided to learn this when I heard it at the start of January ( I think), when everyone voted for the Weavers’ March. I thought this was a much more interesting tune with depth and character, so have learnt it instead. Now feel inspired to have a go at recording! We will see!

End of a quiet month; onto the next one - stick late contribs on the end here of course.

Late entry dutifully entered  (:)

This wasn't supposed to be a recording for public consumption. I had loads of ideas for basses and variations....but life's too short so here's the vanilla version.

Great minds think alike - recording on the same day...! Love the rich harmony feel you create in this, brought out by the tremolo on the instrument.

Thanks Mike. I love the bounce you got into your recording. Maybe we're too fussy.
My basses are the responsibility of Microbot who tuned them for me a few months ago. I do like what he's done with them.

Thanks Mike and Greg, enjoyed both your versions.
I think the tune is one of those that is just so enjoyable to play, and it comes out in your playing.
