Name these Quebec tunes!
« on: February 05, 2018, 08:19:27 PM »

I'm stumbled upon some great examples of Quebec box tunes being played by an unnamed gentleman on youtube.  Unfortunately, none of the tunes are named in the video either, even though I recognize some of them, so I'm hoping folks here can help me out.  Here's the first one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut7zciw0gEM

As I learn each tune from his YouTube channel, I'll post a link in the hopes that someone can identify the tune by name.  Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that's Laureat Caron. He's a fantastic 3+ row player as well. He's got stuff all over youtube and facebook.

Confirmed.  This tune was composed by accordion player and builder Marcel Messervier - it was the musical theme for a show of the same name on a local radio station.

Thank you for that.  Here's the next one: the tune is being played by Raynald Ouellet at the beginning and ending of this "How's It's Made" segment here:

I recognize the tune, and it sounds like a track that I have on an old LP that's listed by the name of "Galope du Bas-Saguenay", but I've never come across that name anywhere else.  Anyone?

It's one that I have known for ever but - like a lot of Québec tunes that I never set out to learn and that just wormed their way into my brain - I didn't know the name. Seeing that nobody had replied I phoned a friend and lilted the tune into her voicemail. She has just replied by email, confirming that familiarity breeds forgetfulness as far as names are concerned:

Question facile ! La galope de Baie Saint-Paul. Et moi qui vient d'écrire à Richard Forest pour la même question, au sujet d'un autre air....ça fait trop longtemps qu'on les joue.

This one is also widely known as 'St-Ferréol' or 'Reel de St-Ferréol'.

Thanks, everyone.  I haven't been able to find very many examples of that tune under either name.  The one recording I do have, on the LP "Portrait du Vieux Kebec" by "L'Ensemble folklorique de Baie St-Paul", has it simply listed as "La Galope".  Re-reading the liner notes, I realize I made a mistake when I referred to it as "La Galope du Bas-Saguenay"; it is Hungarian in origin but played in the style of Bas-Saguenay.  It was my hasty reading of the french notes that resulted in that error.  I'd love to hear it played on the box!

Raynald Ouellet plays it on this CD https://www.amazon.co.uk/Melodies-Raynald-Ouellet-Normand-Legault/dp/B000066J5W  .  It's the 2nd of 3 tunes on the 1st track, and they call it 'Set américain 1ère partie', so here's another name for you !  (:)  I got the CD from the accordion museum in Montmagny.

Also Track 2 on Les têtes de Violon - Les deux rives (a fiddle CD), as La galope de Baie St-Paul.

Also, I thought I remembered the second time from Ouellet’s Mélodie album, and when I tried to find it in iTunes on my phone, I found to my horror that it’s no longer in my library. I suspect Apple Music is the culprit, and for reasons I do t understand, I lost the files to the ether. Grrrrr

If you bought the album  from ITunes you should be able to reinstall it, click on your purchased menu and you should be able to see it and reinstall it on your phone.

Edit: you have to be log in, I'm not that tech savvy but have done it to re install items I've bought.

No, I bought the CD and put it on my iTunes.

Previously, when I synced my phone, even if I didn’t choose to synch a given album, it still  appeared in iTunes on the phone, just not available to listen. Now it doesn’t show at all.

I wonder if the player in your clip is the Alcide of La soirée chez Alcide... Probability moderate to high, I'd say. Will keep my ears open.

The player is Alcide Savard. I don’t know much else about him, but I like his style. There are a few more clips of his playing on YouTube:

https://youtu.be/rYniB1i3e24

https://youtu.be/VLVhMWMuO9c

In the first clip he’s playing a rather rare Vanderaa one-row!
