Working on an accordion related website, advice welcome
« on: August 18, 2016, 11:09:20 AM »

Hello,

I'm currently working on a website (http://dia.to, something that I've been trying to achieve for years) on diatonic accordions, and before going any further I would like your opinion on a specific matter.
The aim of the website is to provide a database of accordion models, with their characteristics, and allow for users to review them, and for visitors to compare models (for instance if you're looking for a 2 rows with 3 voices, the website provides a dynamic comparison table). There is also a part dedicated to understanding how an accordion works, and also provide keyboard layouts, and buying guides. The general aim is for anyone to be able to understand and choose its melodeon.

Enough introduction, my question is: do you think that such website would interest English-speaking people ? The website is currently only in French and it's preferable to anticipate a multi-language site than to have to change later.

If some people (not necessarily fluent in French, it's not that complicated for now) are interested to know more, do not hesitate to contact me, I can grant you access to the alpha website (work in progress).

We tried something similar a few years back (see Instrument Database Project in the list of forum boards) - didn't really take off because ultimately someone has to input the data and whereas there was interest in reading it, there wasn't much in updating it (we were using wikimedia to allow public updating). Unfortunately it got hacked, and we had to take it down, but it didn't have a lot of data in it anyway.

Cheers,

Clive

Yes I can confirm, it's quite painful to do, but for now I've nearly 140 models in the database. I still have some big catalogues to add, I guess there should be more than 200 models pretty soon.

It's a shame for your project, seing much time and effort ruined in matters of seconds, I know the feeling...

I'd love to see such a database of models and reviews.  The melnet one was really just getting going when it was hacked and abandoned.  I guess my one vote doesn't justify multilingual development, though!

I wonder whether the material that was on the melnet version cold be made available for this project?

Andrew, you're very right. I've been hacked by the past, not a good experience.

I've attached a screenshot of all the makers that are in the database for now, maybe it'll help to tell if remnants from the melnet database could be useful ?

I'm pretty sure that all the melnet files were deleted because of the risk of infection.  But if I remember correctly most of the instruments listed were older models no longer in production.

Sounds very interesting AND a lot of work! I'd check it out if it were in English. Thanks for the effort!

Yes, I vaguely remember the discussion at the time, there were other reasons for letting it lie and not going through the rigmarole of reinstating it.

Hi all,

I'm currently drafting an english version of my website (https://dia.to). While I'm still grasping the complexity of the translation modules in Drupal (the CMS behind the site), I'm wondering which currencies I ought to use.
One simple way is to mention the euro version (as in French) and add dollar and pound in brackets, but it's a bit bloating the display. Would it be sufficient ? If not, there could be two other ways : let the approximative price in euro and provide a sidebar with a currency converter (easy way) or provide a currency switch (hard way).
Do you have a preference ?

I think you should just display prices in € only.  That is simple and clear. Anyone can easily do their own conversion.  If I look at a website in the Eurozone I prefer to see the € price.  If you display prices in other currencies then buyers may believe you accept payment in those currencies. On my website theboxplace.co.uk I display prices in £ with a brief explanation about payment methods.  When I sell an instrument I want to talk to the customer before they buy to discuss their wants and to ensure I can supply what they really need.  Payment methods and currency conversion can be part of that conversation.

I agree with Theo. People can do their own euro-to-theircurrency conversions easily enough.

Keep up the good work!

Bernard Loffet's website (diato.org) has a page (tarif des accordeons) where the prices are hyperlinks to a currency conversion website.

It's quite depressing to see how his prices (in sterling) have gone up over the last couple of years as the pound has sunk against the euro.

A Yank here to chime in that while your average joe may or may not know how to convert euros to dollars (lately my faith in man’s intelligence is under siege) those who play amd are interested in accordions surely would.  Euros is fine.

Yes, euros. If anyone cannot sort that himself he shouldn't be buying abroad on t'Internet?

Cool URL! Tonga based?  I see that popa.to gets one a small reprimand 🤔 with toma.to still unregistered.

Tonga, indeed. Thank you, I have to admit I'm quite satisfied with the URL !  8)

There seem to be a landing page at least, for toma.to, is that you ? (would be a rather expensive joke (:) )

I've just added the Sandpiper and new Oakwood models in the database. I will update informations on the Oakwoods as soon as there is more info on the website.
If I understood correctly they're GB-designed and made in Italy, possibly by Bafetti ?
