ABC notation
Has anyone got the time to explain this to me?

If D2  = D row second button
And G2 = G row second button

What doe cB mean?

Does A2 mean the A button twice?  If so which row?

D2 | G2 D2 G2 A2 | B2 cB A2 Bc | d2 G2 G2 B2 | AGFE  D2 \
D2 | G2 D2 G2 A2 | B4    A2 Bc | d2 G2 BAGF  | G4    G2 ||\

Sorry Yvonne, but you are completely misunderstanding ABC.

It's not specifically melodeon related; ABC is a generic notation method for any type of music or instrument.
The letter names refer to the notes of the musical scale, not buttons.
The numbers refer to the note length. In its raw form 2 means a half note (minim), 4 means a quarter note (crotchet).
But the default note length can be set in the tune header (which isn't shown in your example) which in turn will affect the meaning of the numbers by a factor of 1/2 or 2 or some other value. Looking at your example, I would guess that the default note length is an 1/8th note (quaver) so un-numbered notes are quavers, notes with a 2 are crotchets, and notes with a 4 are minims.

A comprehensive set of explanations of ABC is here:
http://abcnotation.com/learn

and this one is good to start off with:

I first came across ABC when learning the melodeon, probably because the folk world seems to have taken to it (or is it vice versa?). I remember think it was pointless to learn another system, but how wrong I was.

For anyone in doubt I would suggest it is well worth jumping onto the learning curve, which is quick and easy.

ABC is very flexible from a software point of view. I always convert to dots but some people see that as a hindrance and just use the ABC as text.

Yes, I always convert to dots *and* it will play the tune too, which means you can listen and read at the same time.
Particularly useful if your sight reading is a bit shaky, like mine!

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

I am one of the rare and special people who play directly from the ABC, it's easier than reading dots  >:E

Ah well, each to their own!
I value the fact that I can look at the tune and hear the exact tune played.
I then will go away and read the dots when learning, returning to the app to listen when I need to understand how some bits are played.

I wish i could do that. I'm a huge fan of ABC. Its fantastic for carrying around a virtual library on my fone when im out at work. Wonderful for sending tunes to people etc but i still have to have it converted back to dots to be able to play from it.

We are so lucky to be living in this age. I was sat in my van in the middle of nowhere the other night and i couldnt remember the B part of a tune. I got out my fone and using Trad Musician, logged onto The Session, opened my tunebook and downloaded the tune. Then i could see the dots and get the app to play the tune to remind me of the phrasing!!!! :||:

Yes, dead right Jimmy.
Abc, slow downers, Internet, YouTube, all great sources available wherever you are.

Must get to grips with abc after Lester's pep talk about it at the Bretforton play group!

slow downers

Whoever invented the YouTube facility to play something slower or faster and not lose the pitch deserves a gold medal.

I use it all the time to follow videos by Lester, Mel, Anahata, Clive, Gavin, Sandy Shallis, Daddylonglegs and all the other brilliant box players who've uploaded their tunes.

(If you've not found it click on the little wheel in the corner of a YouTube video and click on the speed you want)

The best ( and only ) app I've ever bought for my iPad is 'Amazing slowdowner'. Not sure if it's available for pc, it might be.
It not only slows it down without loss of pitch, it also allows you to change keys.
Therefore that excellent Scandanavian/French/Foreign tune you've always wanted to learn, but never worked out which key it's in becomes tweakable to learn on a DG.
It's just excellent!

Audacity (freeware on windows, Mac, Linux) has the capability of both slowing down and retaining pitch or changing the pitch to one's hearts desire.

and that's just a small fraction of its capabilities.

Audacity - yes I think I've heard that it can be a good slow-downer but never investigated it fully.
The plus for me using Amazing Slowdowner is that I can use it on my ipad. That means it's portable and I can go to other rooms in the house ( or anywhere in fact ) and learn tunes without being tied to my pc.
Not sure if from Lester's post 'mac' means it could also be used on an ipad (?) but have got used to the Amazing Slowdowner so will stick with that.

Ah - looks like Mike's a convert too  8)
Yes, the apps market is now providing alternatives.
I suppose I've had A-SD  for about 3 years, really like it as it does everything I want to do well, so it was £6.99 well spent in my opinion!
cheers

Another option is ABRSM Speedshifter which I run on my Android phone.  I think it was about £2.99 but it is really good...
