Sessions around North Yorkshire?
« on: February 23, 2018, 06:04:13 AM »

Dear melnet travel agency,

I'm planning a week or so (from Monday 25th June) around north Yorkshire/Cumbria for a bit of walking etc, and I'm hoping it will coincide with a few good sessions in the area. Something within an hour's drive from Kirkby Stephen? Vague plans to head over to the North York Moors afterwards.

Thanks for any suggestions, Ian

I'll try and summarise what's going on in the area of Kirkby Stephen -
Tuesdays - Hope & Anchor in Ulverston. Mainly Cumbrian tunes
Wednesday's - Second in the month, Oddfellows Arms in Kendal. English and Euro. Regular Melnetters include McGrooger, Bob Ellis, Frank Lee, and myself.
Wednesday's - Lamplighter bar in Windermere. Irish
Thursday's - Rifleman's pub in Kendal. Irish
Thursdays - First in month, Hill Inn near Ingleton. Mixed
Second in month, Lion in Settle. Mixed
                  Third in month, Clapham. Mixed
Fourth in month, Lion in Settle. Mixed
Thursdays - Gregson in Lancaster. English and Euro
I realise some are quite a haul from Kirkby, but good luck in finding something. PM me if you need any more info.

Thanks for that info Hugh - hope I can get to at least one of those sessions while I'm in the area.

Theo has moved this topic to "News and Events" ...  so I 'spose an aussie melodeon player must be a bit of a novelty in those parts  ;D

I’m sure you would be a welcome event anywhere!

But seriously a session is an event so this is where the topic belongs.

One or two places from my part of North Yorkshire -

Mondays. (from what passes for my memory) Mixed Session, Tap and Spile, Harrogate
Tuesdays. Mixed session, small but friendly in "The Maltings", Lendal Bridge, York
Wednesdays. Mixed singing and playing at The Mended Drum", Huby, Easingwold
Thursdays. Last in the month at "The Volunteer Arms", Watson Street, York.
Fridays. Irish/mixed tunes with good singing at The Three Legged Mare, Petergate, York.

I know I havemissed out a good number around York and the NY Moors, but I just can't remember the full details. In particular there is at least one at Whitby and one in Kilburn by the Mousy Man's workshop. This may also help - http://www.folk-now.co.uk/yfa/directory/index.html

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Correction - the Harrogate session is of course on Tuesdays, which is why I have only once played there. I spotted it in my today's emails, announcing that because of the high risk of bad snow in the Forest of Knaresborough, tonight's session was cancelled.

Sorry to have been slow to respond: ill health is restricting my time at the computer at the moment. Hugh has already listed all the sessions in the area of which I am aware. Since you are going to be doing some walking in the area, I would suggest, weather permitting, a walk up Ingleborough on the first Thursday in July, a hearty meal in the Old Hill Inn afterwards and then stay on for the tune session that will take place in the Old Hill Inn from around 8.00 p.m. onwards. My idea of a perfect day (depending, of course, on the weather.)

I'll be around Whitby on 29th-30th June and hoping there'll be a tunes session on the Friday or Saturday night. Anywhere within an hours drive? The White Hart has a singing session on Sat night, so that's an option (and maybe catch up with Fritz Fitton again).

Thanks for the info Mike.
Being limited to visits of just a few days in each place, I'm used to hearing "you should've been here last week".
But I'll try to make the most of my visit anyway.

Really useful thread. Can I ask if anyone knows of sessions (any will do) in striking distance of Keswick..? The ones mentioned are just a bit too far for an upcoming week.

Hugh Taylor runs one in the Oddfellows Arms in Kendal on (I think) the second Wednesday of each month. There are others in the Kendal/Staveley area, but Hugh, who will probably respond, knows more about them than I do.
