I've recently reached the point where my idea of a good pub session is about 6 people, sharing tunes, playing together, improvising a little and actually listening to each other as they play. I don't get enough of this stuff and must cause more to happen.
At the other end of the scale is the steady speed sessions - and I run one - a roomful of enthusiasm, vary degrees of skill and musicality and so much volume you can't hear yourself play most of the tune. Managing it can be exhausting but also very rewarding as people develop in skill, confidence and repertoire - and essentially we won't get more of the former type of session unless we provide plenty of the latter for new people to learn and develop.
Basically, a few tunes in the pub with your mates, what could be nicer?
