Poll: Tune of the Month for March 2018
« on: February 24, 2018, 08:39:55 PM »

Oh no! I've forgotten to set up the poll! Quick, let's find some tunes to vote on....

Tip Top Polka - last month's runner up played by Paul Earwicker, and very nice too... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFM_f36k42k

Sir Sidney Smith's March - a standard, but fairly challenging piece popularised by Roger Watson. Here played by Anahata... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EggASW2HFQ8

Tripping Upstairs - another standard, played here by Sandy : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYTDxiAr_ok

Chat Noir Chat Blanc - an off the wall suggestion, and not a tune I'd heard before, but it seems playable enough and is very nice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CAqmcKV2bo and a more elaborate version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsIMhzhpcyY ; film music I *think*.

Phew! Think I got away with it! Happy voting folks...

Clive

Maybe it's just me, but I've always known the tune used by Britannia Coconut Dancers as The Tip TAP Polka, and the tune I know as The Tip Top Polka is a mid-19th Century American tune. Probably doesn't matter, as we all know which tune we're considering, and I may have had the wrong end of the stick for the last 40 years or so......

Um..... I've always known it as Tip Top so, er,  Graham.....!   ;)

I love it played at the speed they dance.
I was watching them dance to the sound of their brass band at Sidmouth a couple of years back.
I find it totally bonkers and totally wonderful at the same time. Love 'em to bits. One day I'll get Oooop North and see it in their natural environment.
Sounds a bit like Attenbourough on another nature expedition!

Don't the Stacksteads Band who play for the Nutters know the Tip Top Polka as Clow Bank?

Hugh, you might be right there, it sounds familiar but I don't know for certain.
I still have this vivid memory of them performing right in front of me. I just love it!
Makes me smile just thinking of them  (:)

Occasionally I'll play the tune at what I think is nearer their 'dance' speed on my Bb/Eb box and.....somehow it sounds better.
Perhaps a case of 'right key for the tune'?
