Dino Baffetti Art. 85 LCGB
« on: February 28, 2018, 03:26:18 PM »

Good day all.

I'm thinking about buying a Dino Baffetti Art. 85 LCGB: http://baffetti-accordions.com/fisarmoniche/art-85-lcgb/

Does anyone have experience with this brand or box model?

Does anybody know what the tuning is like?  I think it's a wet tuning but am not sure.

Does anyone know the difference between the 85 and 86 series?

Any input would be helpful.

Thank you.

The 85 is a 3 voices model, is bigger and heavier than the 86 model, and also has 21 buttons where the 86 has only 19. The 86 features a classical Italian keyboard with wooden mechanics, and the 85 is a closed keyboard, probably with metal mechanics.
Dino Baffetti is a good brand, with a well-tried factory. You may have tested some Saltarelles that still (I think) has part of its range made by Baffetti. I don't know their policy regarding tuning, you ought to be able to specify which tuning you want, but as I said, I don't know their tuning policy.

Firstly, apologies for this rather naive feedback. They look very similar to the Dino Baffetti instruments that are called 'Carnival' here in the UK. The page on their website, http://baffetti-accordions.com/strumenti/fisarmoniche-diatoniche/serie-8-bassi/ at the bottom, there's a table that shows the differences across the whole range, so for 85 vs 86, you can see that there is a difference in the number of buttons and number of voices, again likening the two to Carnival III and Carnival II instruments respectively, however in this case, the LCGB, it lists that there are 3 voices for the bass chords, and that might not be the same as all Carnival IIIs - which I'm not sure if have 3 or 4 (you can see some instruments in the 85 range have 4 bass voices, but these also have no 3rd stop). Also the materials may be different for the cases, and the tuning may be based on the market they're being sold to/dealer spec, so I'm afraid I don't know what it would be like in this case.

A lot of people like Dino Baffettis, I play a box made by them, and I see a lot of people playing them when out. The main problem you might experience is probably the wooden keyboard can become sticky if the wood is effected by climate in some way, and I've heard while the air button used to have a habit of breaking, that they've since changed the design to prevent this.

This is what used to be sold as a Carnival III model - I'm pretty certain you won't be able to order direct from Dino Baffetti. They always used to have dealership arrangements and were scrupulous about forwarding enquiries to the shops to deal with.  Then again, things may have changed, and I'm rather out of the loop these days but I understand Dino himself passed away earlier this year. If they are dealing directly with the public then you may be able to upgrade your reeds too, so it might be worth asking about options. They are good people.

Cheers,
J

The people I work with sometimes - www.squeezeboxes.co.uk - i.e. Martyn Banks has the Dino Baffetti dealership in the UK at the moment ... I think they have Carnival IIIs in stock.

That's good to know. So presumably the Binci and Super models are still available? I get asked about these from time to time. I'll pass them on.

Sal,
I'm not sure where you're located but would you mind sharing where you purchased it? I'm in California and wouldn't mind an Art.85 myself.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

I purchased the Dino Baffetti from a store in Canada: http://www.musicworldacademy.com/store/index.php

The guys at the store are great.  Check to see if they can order an 85 for you.

Let me know if you have any questions.

If you still are playing the Dino Baffetti I'd like to know your thoughts after three years.

Thanks.

Ken,

Good day.

Yes. I am still playing the Dino Baffetti and have been happy with it for the past three years.  It's a nice box and it sounds great.

I am actually upgrading to a Castagnari Mory since I have MAD and prefer the layout of accidentals on the Mory.

I carry them in my shop from time to time in Pinole (just moved from Oakland) a and could order the instrument for you. They have always been good about warranty issues.
They will custom tune as I recall.
