WARNING - new breed of eBay scammer
« on: March 11, 2018, 08:00:56 PM »

A lot of eBay scams are pretty blatant and obvious to people who are aware of them, but the last few days I've noticed a new technique (to me anyway) that is rather more subtle, using a stolen account with lots of good feedback.

Giveaways are lots and lots of desirable items of various kinds (in this case 2,913 of them, including 751 musical instruments!), all listed at the same time and for only three days, and with a seller in Germany it says, but that doesn't tally with the Business seller information which is for someone in the United States.

There haven't been any diatonic accordions/melodeons yet, but there are five listings for good concertinas, including a Wheatstone Aeola English and two Jeffries Anglos. (I actually know the present owner of one of them! :o)

And there's even a 3/4 set of Uilleann pipes made by Tadhg Crowley of Cork, 1930s.

Interesting and good to know, thanks for the tip Triskel !!

Does EBay provide a list of these "giveaways" to scams? Do you know.

Not that I know of - they're no doubt busily trying to keep up with all the latest ones themselves...  :-\

I’ve been aware of this kind of scam for a small number of years now, so I don’t think it is very new.  It’s usually easy to detect because the scammer has to divert payment away from the hijacked account and it’s linked PayPal account.  So you will usually see payment instructions that ask the buyer to use a different email address to contact the seller.  This is usually in a text message included in an image.
Or is this new method where the scammer hijacks the linked papal account as well?

It appears to be, it looks quite legitimate from that point of view, that's the thing... :o

Using Triskel's link in the opening item it would appear that all the musical intems have been removed from Ebay, hopefully Ebay's own security has kicked in. In any case many thanks to Triskel in alerting us to this danger, in this day and age honesty seems to have vanished and we can no longer trust anyone, even known traders can well have been hacked without their knowledge.

I didn't think this was possible with modern encryption. I am starting to feel worried in a general sort of way.

The vast majority are gone now, but there are still 140 items left in a search, though they're no longer available if you click on them.

It's the second time I've seen this particular scam attempt in the past week, and it's got taken down by eBay. But you can bet they'll be back, maybe with an "improved" version of it next time... >:(

It looks like "the dreaded 3-day sale scammer" has moved to Switzerland with all his 6,301 items now! :o >:(

I wonder how many non-existent pantechnicons it took to move all those non-existent items he had, all the way from Hamburg...  ::)

Oh, and now he's in Australia, with 15,589 items - that was quick! :o

I wouldn't mind that VINTAGE 1935 Martin 00-40H Acoustic Guitar Brazilian Rosewood Original Pre War for £12.10 though, my old mate Tom Paley had one of them...  ::)

Oh, but wait, that one's still in Hamburg. ???

And he also reckons he's in Spain and Canada...

I wonder where this boyo really is?  (I know where he SHOULD be! >:(

Still has all the bidding instructions in text in an image, which should ring alarm bells for anyone reading the description.

As may as possible should report this to ebay as fraudulent selling.

Gone already.

Yes, eBay seem to be well on top of the situation with this one and they very quickly took down something-like 6,000 items. So I'll not mention this again, unless something seems particularly worrying/alarming.

A change in modus operandi by (seemingly) the same scammer - they've gone over to holding 24-hour sales: https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/americansuppliesdepot11/m.html?item=173270316379&hash=item2857b7355b%3Ag%3Ahu4AAOSw82Ba0fUy&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

And they're now listing the all-too-familiar Manfrini-3-Voice-Button-Accordion-in-the-key-of-BC

They even have a fake eBay login page, so if you try to buy from them your eBay account can be stolen.
