My personal recollection from 1971 is of Ericas/Black Dots costing £25.00 in Manchester, and 114s were £17.50.

But I was a student then, with not a lot to spend, and my £17.50 bought a very nice 56-key, glass-buttoned, Lachenal "New Model" concertina, and I got a new brass-reeded "Parsifal" melodeon for £8.40 (8 guineas!) instead of a Hohner.

There is a clear progression emerging with wide disparity at either end of the decade. The quoted 1971 price of £18.00 for an HA114 is in stark contrast to the £78.00 which I paid for the same model in 1978. I note that others have made comparison with average wages and the cost of motor vehicles. I wonder how these prices relate to the expected income for working musicians. Within my own experience, I still have the receipt from Bells in Newton Aycliffe showing that I paid £118.00 for a new 114 in 1982. Quite a hike from the 1978 price and a long way from the 1971 starting point. As a student I considered this a reasonable price and the instrument had paid for itself after 12 weeks busking. In 1986 I earned an average of £60.00 for a solo gig, by 1990 that had risen to £120.00. 30 years on I still average £120.00 for a band gig and slightly more for solo.

It's interesting that the Erica is significantly more expensive than the "Vienna".  I don't recall what I paid for mine in the mid 1970s but I'm sure I wouldn't have paid that high a premium for what is substantially much the same instrument, albeit that the Erica (in black of course) was more fashionable.

I paid £125 to Hobgoblin for a new black Erica in D/G in 1984.

Triskel, you may be correct.  As I remember, they had to search around the basement to find it, not on display, in the box, sealed up. Dusty.  No straps or strap brackets.  Maybe they were glad to get rid of it. (!)

Only the "Vienna style" on the 1971 list is a single-row one, the 2-row 2915 wasn't available at the time.

In fact there was already a Hohner price rise 3 months after that January 1971 catalogue, and there's an "April 1971 - Revised Prices of Hohner Accordions" list stapled into the back of it:

                                                           January                   April
Hohner Shand Morino ............................. £345.00 ............... £375.00
Hohner Gaelic IVS ................................. £123.00 ............... £140.00
Hohner Club III M .................................... £91.73 ............... £106.00
Hohner Amatona ..................................... £68.00 ............... £80.00
Hohner Trichord  (3-voice) ........................ £66.00 ............... £75.00
Hohner Primatona .................................... £57.50 ............... ££70.00
Hohner Club II B ...................................... £54.75 ............... £65.00
Hohner Trichord (2-voice) ......................... £50.00 ............... £60.00
Hohner "DoubleRay Black Dot" De Luxe ......... £47.75 ............... £51.40
Hohner Corso ......................................... .£47.75 ............... £51.40
Hohner "DoubleRay Black Dot"..................... £28.00 ............... £29.50
Hohner Erica ........................................... £28.00 ............... £29.50
Hohner 114 Melodeon ............................... £18.00 ............... £22.00
Hohner 1140 "Vienna Style" Melodeon .......... £16.75 ............... £20.50
