Tunes for low G scale
« on: March 15, 2018, 01:54:02 PM »

Hi everyone

I have been reading with interest Maggie’s thread about D/G liliputs on the construction and repair discussion.  I own a similar D/G liliput conversion with a 4th button start and the low G scale.  I started learning to play on a standard 3rd button start melodeon and most of my repertoire still comes from there. Reading the thread and Gena’s reply in particular got me thinking about how I am not using those new low notes now available to me on the Liliput.

So, I am hoping members might be able to suggest good tunes to learn that make use of those extra, currently neglected, buttons on the low G scale.

Regards

Matt

My party trick is to play Donkey Riding in all three octaves on the treble then, with a following wind once through using the bass buttons. (:)

How about 'Zelda'? This uses the low B but many players who lack that note substitute the octave higher.  With the addition of the low B note you can play it as writ or experiment with changing the octaves as well.

There's lots of tunes that use just a handful of low notes, and you could get away without them, but if you have them, nice to use!

You could try: The Charming Maid, Sadlers Wells, Stony Steps, Old Morpeth Rant, and Gloucestershire Hornpipe.

Tunes such as Charming Maid, One more Dance and The Gloucestershire Hornpipe can be played using either 3rd button G or the lower one generally found on a 4th button start.
It is reasonable to assume they all were originally writ for the low G as it's the lowest note on a fiddle, but with the invention of the ( 3rd button start ) DG Melodeon, there wasn't this low G so people played tunes up an octave.
We're now re-learning how they were probably originally played!
cheers

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Speaking as someone with a low octave G and a low D octave, they come into their own when you play octaves. I only have one tune that actually has to use the low D octave in order to work as written.

Stoney Steps played by Anahata! I have the ABC for this somewhere and it's also the last of the variants in Hardcore English if you have that.

The Rose Tree uses the low B.

Butchers Hornpipe (Leadley)

The Cream Pot, Mrs Saggs and Savage Hornpipe (if played in G) need a low C natural, but not the low G.

I like repeating a tune an octave lower for variety, in a session for example. In G you can get a lot further with this when you have those low notes, though it's still possible to run out.
And I make up harmony parts that go down there...

Among many other reasons, The Ashokan Farewell played in D, as I suspect most fiddle players will play it, can use the low G, both the low push and pull A for chord pairings, the low B, and you can use the low C in an octave pair with the C accidental in the B music to (I imagine) give a bit more body to the rather wistful accidental rather than risk stonking the hell out of it with your basses.

Also you can do a run down to the low G at the end of your tunes if it suits it. I'd probably learn the Old Morpeth Rant in G after that because I love pairing those two tunes.

Great thread with some tunes I have never heard of!  And Pete reminds me, I used to call the low G retune (Anahata-type), "Stoney Steps Tuning"!  THANKS.

Wow, thanks everybody!  There is enough there to keep me going for years decades probably  ;)

What a great illustration of the accumulated wisdom available on the forum.

Kind regards
