YouTube Video quality....what am I doing wrong??
« on: March 17, 2018, 09:17:42 PM »

Hi
I have (after multiple takes) uploaded my first ever YouTube vid. Despite recording
on my camera in a high resolution, and exporting (via Videopad) with HD resolution,
the uploaded YouTube  vid isn’t that clear. I look at other melodeon vids by Derek the
Nutter etc which are crystal clear....what am I doing wrong ?? Anyone any ideas..?
Thanks

Could you uh, link to one of them?

Also: what is 'your camera'? how does the export video from Videopad look on your local system?

Hi
My camera is a Canon SX710HS Power shot.
My vid is https://youtu.be/6NS2u4qB6MI
The vid looks better played on the camera.
Apologies , I’m not that technically minded...
I was just wondering how come some YouTube
vids look crystal clear....and mine doesn’t.

OK so according to https://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-sx710/canon-sx710DAT.HTM your camera supports recording in 1080p at both 30 and 60 fps, so, you are using a decent device to record with.

Looking at the video on the camera isn't likely to be a useful thing to do: what is more likely to be helpful is comparing the original video file on your computer compared with the file you export out from Videopad. How do those compare with the video you've got on youtube? You should be able to open them with regular media players. The video on youtube that one you've linked shows up to 1440p for quality settings, so a) that suggests that Videopad is resizing your video in some way, which is usually not a good thing but also b) check that you are actually watching the video with the higher quality settings, as youtube can take some time to process a video and if you look right away often it only has eg 360 or 480p qualities available until a few minutes afterwards.

Well, I have just watched the video, having changed the play quality to HD and it is as sharp and clear as can be. The sound is really good too, so maybe, as has already been said, it just took YouTube a while to get the HD up and running.

By the way, I love your playing and the sound of your instrument !

I absolutely agree. This is most often the biggest problem when youtube videos look weird. It can take up to 60 minutes for videos to be processed on youtube servers to have a decent quality (i.e. 720p+)

It looks pretty good to me too.
Possibly could be a littltle sharper: though Videopad is exporting at HD, without changing the resolution (i.e. image size in pixels) you should be able to vary the amount of compression, making a tradeoff between file size and quality.

The only other comment I'd make is that you might benefit from more light on yourself and less on the background.
I found getting lighting right one of the hardest things with YouTube videos and got a couple of cheap photo lights from Amazon to help.
Something very much like these
I also set up a black backdrop for many of my later videos. That forces your camera to turn up the brightness, highlighting you and your box.

And Gena and Fred are right about YouTube processing...

Thankyou for all your helpful comments which I will now digest...
I agree with the lighting comment, I like to examine fingering in
vids which you can’t do at all in mine 🤔

Lovely playing, Mick..........as usual! And nice to see you, even if it is only on YouTube.

Very nice!

and a simple - non technical -  observation ... the left corner of the couch (or right corner from the viewer's perspective) appears to be the focus point, rather than your slightly fuzzier left hand and face?

Agreed on both points!

(the second explains why I thought it was out of focus and also partly why the background seems to be claiming more attention than the subject)

Also on lighting: looking again (I've got the video on now) there's a bright ceiling light (visible reflected in the picture on the wall) so all you may need to do is move back : either move the sofa or sit on one of those wooden chairs that are further back, and find a camera position that works with you sitting there.

No problem with the "melodeon face"!  Very nice.

Great playing! The video looks pretty good for a first go, and you've got lots of good advice here. It always takes time and trial and error to hone how you're videos look. I've been making videos and putting them on YouTube for over 10 years and still get some duds. Keep at it, everything will improve. Most importantly, the music is great!

Thanks,
Baron

If you visit my blog (link below) you can see I'm still struggling with videoing, especially with my new camera, even after >500 videos.

Nice playing BTW
