Erika grill refurb
« on: March 27, 2018, 11:04:31 PM »

The grill coating on my Erika looks to be silver/aluminium paint or similar, rather than chromed as on Pokerworks etc. and the finish is looking worn although not rusty.

Apart from new grill cloth, any recommendations on the best way to smarten it up?  My immediate thought is silver metallic car paint from Halfords or is there a better approach?

Car spray paint is good, and would be my first choice. It doesn't have to be silver though. A black grille with white grille cloth looks very handsome with the toffee coloured Erika finish.

I would advise to first remove all old paint from the grille using paint stripper, then if there is any rust, use a proprietary rust treatment (Halfords is a good source) to neutralise it. Rub down the treated grille with 400 grade wet-or-dry paper and then spray paint with the colour of your choice.

Agreed, but usually you need to use the correct primer prior to applying the finish.

The paint on Erika grilles is very thin and is easily removed with methylated spirits or nail varnish remover (acetone) and fine steel wool.
Rather than use a plain white grille cloth I think it always looks better to dye it pale yellow like the original. For the paint I just use a metallic silver spray which is very similar to the original.

Thanks for the advice. I already have some pale cream grill cloth from Charlie. Sounds like I just need to make a colour decision, visit Halfords and then get stripping!!  >:E
