Tune of the Month for April 2018: Les Deux Freres
« on: April 01, 2018, 05:39:48 AM »

Hi all - this month's winner, this toon by Toon (sorry!) from Naragonia:

Les Deux Freres - there are quite a few videos of this tune now video'ed nice and close up, including this version designed for 2 row melodeon by Naragonia itself (it's in their tune book!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-Qxfc45BkU and this one from Mr Ellison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB0R8tX9Mgc

It fits surprisingly well on a 2 row I think.

Cheers,

Clive

Q's thread on this is well worth a gander. It's a mine of information.

Oh I'm very happy this song has won the poll. I'm excited to listen to all of your renditions.

Hoping to get around to record it tomorrow. (:)

I'm really pleased this won too and I am planning to learn and record it.  I'm in Belgium with North British just now and had a quick play with it but with no dots. It fits nicely on a D/G I think but I have yet to think too hard about chords.  In the meantime does anyone have and to share?

I have the dots, including basses and tablature, in Naragonia tunebooks but these are for a GC box.

And here it comes: https://soundcloud.com/laubblaeser/les-deux-freres-take-1

Tune is in G and as always it has been played on my Loffet D/G which I'm still very very happy with (although it has a pretty weird keyboard layout on some buttons but I got used to it).

It's far from perfect but that's where I currently stand with the tune. Been playing it for 2 months or so already, so it's kind of cheating to post it on the second day of April for TotM. Still, maybe it's helpful for others to listen to my rendition and get a few ideas about which mistakes not to make, which basses to choose or other kinds of inspiration. Have fun listening! (:)

What a good tune ! I'm hoping that Naragonia tunebooks will be available at the Blowza weekend at Halsway (they are guesting - should be great...)
Dots will be helpful but I suspect this tune will become a long standing work in progress...

Wow, Saul! That's just lovely. I really dig the bass work you did on this piece.
Now I should get back to work and learn how you did it. (:)

Bit of an old recording from me but I might get a chance to do a new one sometime this month: https://soundcloud.com/robotmay/les-deux-freres. I'm not sure why but this tune has taken on a rather odd characteristic in sessions I've been to, where it's played with a very sudden, forceful pause in the B music. The original is much softer, so it's nice to see recordings here going for that style!

I did learn it in Bb at some point, I should probably try that again and record it like that; the playing style it requires does make it sound more like Toon's playing ;D

There are Trois frères, now  ;)   It is a gavotte de l'Aven, or more properly the fluid part of a much larger dance style 'suite Gavotte'.  The simplified, dreamy version in danced in lines of 4 people, and is known as gavotte de l'Aven "caresse" in many dance circles, notably Rhone-Alpes people. I have also heard it called Gavotte de l'Aven "intime".  I understand that the Bretons do not entirely approve … but it is quite, utterly, lovely to dance  (:)

The length of that pause matters. It should be just long enough for the dancer to swing the right leg from in front … to behind the body.

Thanks Chris, that video of Naragonia playing for the dance really puts the tune in context.

Here's a quick (in many ways!) version in Bb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpcAuJruLIY
The bellows on this box are a bit stiff (doesn't get played as often as my others) so it's pretty tricky to play long slow bars in a single direction, hence the slightly rapide performance. It's also drifting out of tune a bit, which is pretty noticeable in a bandoneon-tuned box ::)

If you're curious about the layout (attached), it's a slightly adapted Pariselle G/C layout. I swapped the top 4 basses around to make playing in Bb easier. The top G reversal (on the last button of the G row) is immensely useful.

I had thought to give this one a miss as significantly outside my comfort zone, but then....

Not trying to replicate the prescribed arrangement, came up with this:-

https://youtu.be/wCFBVJ7P09w

Hohner Bb/Eb & Castagnari Dony 8 D/G

All the best

Lovely version Robert. It sits very nicely on your box ... but very difficult to follow how you get there.   :(

folkbluesnbeyond, that's really a special rendition. I like the unqiue touch you gave the song and the alterations you made to it. Well done! :)
