So glad this won Tune of the Month - I have learnt so much from this, particularly the basses.

Thanks all for the great contribs so far; here's my version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkWFvzLnc6w

Played "Vivant style", which effectively means playing it on the semi-unisonoric basses Mory, and holding down the G chords as a drone rather a lot.

Cheers,

Clive

Good to hear the different approaches. I now think mine was a bit lively.

Just in time for the end of the month.

https://youtu.be/iB4GYwnkC98   for youtube

and https://soundcloud.com/jackdiatonique/les-deux-frere-naragonia-melnet-tune-of-the-month-518

Just to compare the sound  of the same track on the two different platforms. Much nicer on soundcloud, isn't it? and a lot easier to post.

Attempting a sparse and clean version, and one of Toon's basslines: love that E (in F major) for the 2nd bass note (=F# in DG-speak)

The youtube volume is  OK on headphones, but too quiet on the laptop speakers. Something else to try to fix  in future.

Some more eagle-eyed melnetters may have noticed I haven't posted anything for several months. My excuse is a house move and lots of associated DIY home improvement work, including (finally) fitting my new recording studio.
Just about done now, and I wanted to get this in while it's still April:

Really glad to see you back able to make videos!

I really like the notes played underneath the main on the 2nd time through the A, I think is it mostly the 3rd that would be absent from the chord in that moment? (I think, 3rds stop is active?)

I'm also interested in the choice of the E basses instead of the G basses for that B note in I guess bar 2 of the B music per the ABC on page 1. It's a very different choice from other versions I've heard here, I think.

Yes, I have the thirds out, and on reflection I think you are right that much of that RH harmony puts them back in. That probably explains why it seems to work well at warming up the harmony, even though it's quite sparse.

Blame that on insufficient study of the original and other versions due to lack of time. Though if you think it sounds better, why not?

In the end, though it's an instructive exercise to copy somebody else's harmony exactly, it's not compulsory!
