LMM MMM MMH etc.
« on: April 02, 2018, 05:09:16 AM »

What exactly does MMM LMM MMH etc. refer to?  Is it the octaves?

Yes, MMM has 3 reeds per note, all of them in the same octave.  LMM has 1 of the 3 reeds an octave below the other 2, MMH has 1 reed an octave above the other 2.  (and L, M and H stand for low, medium and high respectively)

On some accordions the reed mixtures are given names too, and the L is sometimes called 16' (16 foot), M, 8’ and H, 4’. Which (I think) is a reference to organ pipe lengths.
On an octave Settimio PA I have (LMMH) the couplers are labelled thus..
Bassoon (L); Bandoneon (LM); Organ (LH), Master (all voices), violin (MM), Oboe (MH) and Piccolo (H).
It doesn't have an M coupler...so I'm not sure what that would be called. It is a magnificent instrument but weighs about the same as a wardrobe.

And LM can be labelled Bandoneon on some accordions.

Also LM+ can be labelled 'saxophone', but it usually sounds horrible to my ears, especially if the M+ is particularly sharp.
Personally I think such labelling is an insult to saxophones, which are amazing instruments with a glorious range of sounds!

And some argue that LH is the proper bandoneon sound. But I checked an actual bandoneon to verify and it was LM. (:)

How about LMH? Maybe another version of "organ"

Then there's "SMH" which makes no sound at all but can be expressive!

Oh, thats how I know the octaves as, 16' 8' and 4'   For my type of music we usually do 888, 884 or 844. So that would be MMM MMH MHH   Thanks all for clearing this up for me.

LMH...now that is a fair point. I don't have the PA to check right now, but I did convert a LMM Hohner Student to LMH for someone. It sounded great, have to say. But not sure what you'd call that voice combo.

On a Roland, LMH is called 'Harmonium'

Accordion reed ranks and switches - Wikipedia  LMH is Harmonium, I've two button boxes and a PA with that and it's my favorite sound for sure.

The Wiki page shows an old Excelsior PA with rocker switches to control the reed banks instead of couplers with presets, ala melodeons with pull stops.  A lot of PA players are quite fond of this idea but it never caught on.  Some PAs/CBAs have two ranks of 13 couplers at the lower and higher ends of the keyboard, to minimize the distance you have to reach to change settings!  It was all part of the unisonoric accordion arms race of the 1950s.  Russian bayans have chin couplers, a great idea on such huge instruments; on a button box...maybe not.
