Grill Mesh
« on: April 06, 2018, 03:52:44 AM »

I'm looking to replace the mesh/fabric on a Corona grill.  Where can I get one that is close to what Hohner sells, for cheap?  Preferably here in USA.  I know I can get it from the hohner site, but it's $35 or $45 plus shipping.

http://www.hohnershop.com/accordion-grills/

Like the mesh on this one. Tightly knitted.

Take a look in craft stores selling needlepoint materials. The base material, 'canvas' or Aida, comes in a variety of open weaves and is very suitable for Hohner grille lining.

I discovered a material used in bookbinding, called 'mull' here in the UK. It is perfect as grille cloth...I kind of imagined that perhaps accordion makers use mull anyway..
I ordered it by accident because I was trying to make a big enough order. I think I ordered 'mull - best quality' and 'Mull - no 1 quality'.
It turns out it is perfect as a grille cloth. The best quality has a slightly closer weave than no1 quality. The material is stiff and so great for cutting to size and gluing in place.
Not sure what it's called in the US but perhaps you could check out a bookbinder supplier?

I found that using Unibond's  'No More Nails'  in the grooves in the grill an excellent clean and quick way to attach mesh.
What do others use? Sorry, slightly off topic.

We've just got home from a shopping trip, and I was highly amused to read "using Unibond's  'No More Nails'  in the grooves in the grill" as I'd picked up a small tube of the same stuff for the self-same purpose, on my Corso! Of course, I'm delighted that I may have made the right choice, for a change.

Personally, I'd take the mesh out and leave it that way, like I have done with my Casali. The mesh tends to dampen the sound, though you might prefer it that way... ???

That's what I did on my recording king also ( per suggestion of PG), I don't miss it.
I suppose it may keep the dust out if its there.

Edit to add: its not on a open pallet box like my Beltuna one row so maybe not a big deal with dust.

An extreme example of this is a Liliput I bought recently.  It has a grille cloth with a very tight weave, non-original and poorly glued except on the perimeter.  When I play, the grille pumps in an out with changing bellows direction !!

I went to my local fabric store and was left more confused than when I went in.  So many options, was hard to pick the right one.  I left empty handed.  Will stick to buying it online.  Thanks all

I found suitable material at a fabric store. $10 enough to do a dozen grilles.

All the suggestions apply if you are maintaining the original look.  I once played a friend's Pokerwork which had very quiet treble against rampant basses - the grille cloth had been replaced with something with too tight a weave and was muffling the treble.  On another box (one of mine) with a balanced bass and treble, but disappointing volume level, I replace the pierced plastic (!) grille lining with some loudspeaker cloth, which after all is designed to be acoustically transparent.  There was considerable improvement without noticeable detriment to the basses.

I will often glue very thin strips of wood into the back grooves of the grill ever four ribs or so. This gives a better surface for gluing.

Ditto, but thin strips of soft cardboard.
