Punched or unpunched? (Valves that is)
« on: April 17, 2018, 01:07:37 PM »

During my first try at replacing valves, and re waxing, I have been using pre-punched valves. They do get involved in the wax, when waxing the bottom of the row, and I wondered whether this mattered?

If the valves don’t have holes punched in them then they won’t be able to fit around the rivet. I guess leather valves usually don’t.

I have never used punched valves and it has never been a problem.

SJ: the below-the-rivet end of the valve isn't going anywhere, so some wax on it shouldn't be a problem. There was a discussion on here a while back about punched vs unpunched IIRC and I don't recall there being any conclusion, you takes yer choice.

I started using non punched valves many moons ago had some valves fall off then I stared using punched valves and still use them, no problems so far..if anything you get a little bit of extra for glue and the wax on top added security I think..
