grabbing a video from Facebook?
« on: April 22, 2018, 10:57:06 AM »

Hi All,
I have been sent a tutorial video from a friend. It as come via Messenger and as I don't use that I've accessed it from my Facebook messages.
I was wondering if there is any way of saving the video so I don't have to log on to fb and open the messages.
Any ideas?

Hi Q

If you put your cursor on the video and right click you should get a "save URL at current time" or some such option

Then when saved paste somewhere, click on it and it should open.

Hi Baz,
Right clicking the video doesn't give an option of saving url.
I tried copying the top  url into another browser but that just gives me the page I was looking at - remember I've got this sent via the message option and open it from Messenger.
Hmmmmmm
It's a good one isn't it? !
cheers

Hi,

in Firefox, VideoDownloadHelper (it's a plugin) helps for this. I'd recommend you give it a try.

Thanks for reminding me, I used to use Firefox like this to save videos but not sure it will work.
As I see it in facebook messenger, sent as a message, I can't see there's an url to copy into the video grabber.
.... But good thought, thanks!

I use Youtube by Click downloader, works like a charm and it's free.

Facebook does something funky with their videos these days where it's actually sent to the browser as a bunch of separate short files, which does make it a pain in the arse to download them. I usually use the Developer Tools in Firefox/Chrome to watch the network traffic and pull the files that way, but Facebook's new system means that doesn't work (last time I checked, anyway).

If it's in the Messenger mobile/tablet app you might be out of luck. Maybe ask them to re-send it via something else? :)

I have succeeded simply by looking at the screen!
i.e. from opening the video in Messenger, I got it to full screen mode.
I realise along the top of the actual video is 'download', which I have promptly just done and so it's safe and secure as video on my pc.
....I either missed that option at the weekend, hence my post or it wasn't there then!!!!
( it is really feint text, honest gov! )

Anyway, mission accomplished.
thanks for the thoughts folks
