St. George's Day
« on: April 23, 2018, 10:09:54 AM »

If you happen to be playing somewhere in public today here's a tune suggestion: (second tune obviously)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeIAbUpDZno

Not celebrated quite as much as St. Patrick's day but perhaps warrants a mention on the home page calendar?

Hi Ellisteph. Lovely playing and great tunes!  Have you got the abc for St George's Day?  I found a version online of what appears to be the tune but it's pretty much unreadable due to the weird abc code.  Also, do you know where it comes from?
Cheers and well played.

Cyprus Morris did our bit on Monday, bringing morris to the streets of Limassol (much to the surprise of tourists!)

Newly acquired G/C Hohner Viktoria. Also Fender Jazz bass, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Epiphone Sheraton, Charvel-Jackson 00-style acoustic guitar, Danelectro 12-string and other stuff..........

Hi thanks and no I don't have an abc I'm afraid - I learnt it by ear from Neil the fiddle player in the video. I'll ask him where it came from and get back to you with the info.

No Nick, of course not - St. George is the hero who slays the Turkish Knight! ::)

[Actually, he seems to have been born in either Cappadocia, in Central Anatolia, or the Roman province of Syria Palaestina. His father was a Roman officer (of Greek heritage) from the former place, and his mother from the latter.]

Well the mystery deepens. Neil says he used to play it with Roy Clinging when they were a duo; Roy claimed he put the two tunes together. However, Dave Ball also plays the same set as does veteran fiddler John Hardy of Audlem. No-one seems to know a written source, though all are convinced that it is an old tune. Neil has also heard John Kirkpatrick play it but quite recently.
Dave Ball is probably the best person to ask, but I'll have to wait until he returns from Ibiza where he is playing 'Folk in the Mosh Pit' or something like that. The truth will out one day.

Not an acquaintance of St. George, but the tunes and playing are definitely a joy!

...I found a version online of what appears to be the tune but it's pretty much unreadable due to the weird abc code....

Here's the ABC code I recently cobbled together from the named tune book:

Code: [Select]
X:27
%Based on the score in The Old Vic Tune Book - http://www.zen37219.zen.co.uk/Yeoldevicband.html
T:St. George's Day
R:Jig
M:6/8
L:1/8
P:AB
K:D
P:A
|: "D" d2 A e2 A | "D" f2 d def | "D" g2 f e2 d | "D" cde ABc |
"D" d2 A e2 A | "D" f2 d def | "Em" gfe ABc | "D" d3 D3 :|
P:B
|: "D" f2 a afa | "G" b2 g g2 f | "G" g2 g geg | "D" a2 f f2 A |
"D" d2 A e2 A | "D" f2 d def | "Em" gfe ABc | "D" d3 D3 :|
N:melodeon.net version has e2 g geg in bar 3 of part B.

As you can see from the comment at the end, there's also a version somewhere on mel.net.
I think it's in meloden.nets big abc file...

Yes - I was first introduced to it last year in Stockport Old Market - on St. George's Day. 'Twas my first gig with t'Morris...

None of us knew it...

I made sure that I got hold of a version in time for next year....

Next (ie: this) year, we weren't playing. Damn  :( !

St George's day is in Northern Frisk - a compilation of tunes from NW England published by Dragonfly music in 1988 and compiled by Jamie Knowles, Pat Knowles and Ian McGrady . Unfortunately doesn't say where the tune comes from - apart from the fact it was taken from collections published by people from the NW of England in 17th,18th and 19th century.

This seems to be the same tune. - TBV

My money says that's the setting Mr McGrooger found. I saw it and  wondered if it had been translated into midi and back.

Excellent sleuthing everyone. The only thing I have to add is that Neil has just informed me he's found some sheet music Dave Ball gave him which says 'Yorkshire Manuscript' next to the title.
