Definitely agree about using 4 fingers for the bass. I played with 2 for years. It wasn't too difficult bringing the 3rd finger in, but I still don't seem to be able to use the little finger very much.
On the other hand, I can't see how it helps not using the little finger on the right hand. I'd have thought that the more fingers you could use, the better.

Yup agree - have just been having a go at using all five (four fingers and 1 thumb) on the RH on my Trichord - and it was great fun - more is more ! Why don't folk use the thumb? If the box is strapped on properly there's no reason why the thumb can't be brought into play.

That a concertina is not a small portable melodeon.  :-[

Unless it's a Franglo, of course!  ;D

A French anglo. It's a concertina laid out like a 3-row melodeon split across the two ends. It was developed and built by Colin Dipper for Emmanuel Pariselle.

That ?s amaz?ng, but I'd rather have a go at a real anglo tbh.

I've seen similar old German boxes with "melodeon" layouts on the square body.  I believe even Alfred Arnold built them!  Of course what I ended up with from ebay.de was a Konzertina - the forerunner to a bandoneon.  When it arrived, I was amazed at the sheer size of it.  I can't reach the buttons without putting my whole hand through the straps!  Amazing sound too.

Am I correct in thinking that's called a Bandonika?.

I'd have to add "pick a tune and learn it."

So often I noodle around , but never really nail a tune down, finding the most economic way to play a passage. It means the difference between clumsy or fluid in many cases. Push- pulling through a string of notes that had a potential for a run of notes in one direction means taking the time to think it through. Later it's second nature, but that's the reward of mastering the tune.

Jumping around too much means a lot of half-baked tunes in my case. This two row doesn't really offer all that many ways of smoothing out a passage. An accidental row with duplicated notes in reverse would help. It's like the concertina, the extra row is not just to find new keys, it's to play the keys you have more fluidly.

I was working on "Liberty" tonight. A nice simple fiddle tune most seem to know. I will also learn Saint annes Reel and Fisher's Hornpipe. I might stick to these until they're smooth, then move on.
