Gasket material for an old cheapie
« on: April 29, 2018, 12:22:25 PM »

I've just rebuilt the growl-box mechanism on an old Sovereign 1-row; the original gasket material was cotton cord. Any suggestions for a modern equivalent or improvement?

Cheers

Neoprene gasket is available from CGM Musical.
For a cheaper alternative there's ordinary draught excluder available from DIY shops and online.
If it's too wide cut it up the middle with a sharp scissors.

Thanks Rees - Charlie's gasket strip is what I normally use; just wondered if there was a more period-correct material readily available.  If not, then it's good old (new!) neoprene, I guess!

You could look at caulking cotton, as a possible substitute for the original material.

Good thought - leather could do the trick. I have some nice soft kid that will do nicely. Thanks!

I think you'll find candle wick is what they normally used.

You can get it on eBay, in 5 or 10 metre lengths, for around £2 or £3 per length...

Has anyone actually used candle wick or the like as a gasket? Does it actually work well (or was it just the best they had?). I assume it's just glued on one side - or does it keep still by itself?
