English/Swedish Concert at Ilkley Manor House, May 8th
« on: May 01, 2018, 10:01:22 AM »

This could be of interest to anyone who like melodeons, concertinas, fiddles, English or Swedish traditional music and song and baroque music...

Concert at Ilkley Manor House.

Quote
The May 2018 concert at IMH will be a programme of traditional Scandinavian and English folk and baroque music. The violinist Ida Meidell Blyodd alongside vocalists and traditional instrumentalists Mary Humphreys and Anahata will be performing on a double bill on Tuesday, May 8th.

Tickets available from Liz Bowen on: 01943 609393

This is a Friends of IMH event.

Strictly melodeon content will a bit be less than at some of our gigs but... with so much variety there should be something for everyone. Lovely venue too; we went there last week and had a look.

I met Ida when she was studying in Newcastle.  She is a superb player, so miss this at your peril!

She is indeed, and a very charming young lady too. She was also joined for a couple of songs by our own Frank Lee, which turned out to be a delightful combination. And I have learned the difference between a polska and a slängpolska...

We are looking forward to having a whole Manor House concert to ourselves, which has been promised for some time in the future.

And I have learned the difference between a polska and a slängpolska...

Yes, there are literally dozens (and dozens more) distinct varieties of polska...of which slängpolska is a subset, not to mention the related forms found in Norway such as pols, springleik, springar and so on.  It is an incredibly rich and fortunately well-preserved tapestry of musical forms going back centuries.

The late Jan Ling of the University in Göteborg (Gothenburg) has written a fascinating book titled "History of Folk Music in Europe" which should be a must-read for musicians and music lovers.  Other interesting books on Swedish music are:

Einar Övergaards Folkmusiksamling compiled and edited by Märta Ramsten
K P Lefflers Folkmusiksamling
Svenskalåtar

The last is a 13 volume set of "official" tune settings from all over Sweden.  However, the degree of "standardization" having been applied by the original editors has been regarded as somewhat of a homogenization of the music volumes such as Övergaard and Leffler which have been printed in the original form and hand of the collectors themselves resulting in a fascinating essential representation of the music.
