Prelude from The Suite No 1 in G Major for unaccompanied cello melodeon.

Just lovely! Now I should get back to practicing more... One day ...

(After a quick use of the search function, I couldn't find out if this link has been posted before. Sorry if that's the case.)

Just sounds as if it is some one miming on a melodeon to an organ track. Would like to hear the original recording.

I understand what you mean, Lester. Quite a lot of post-recording reverb has been applied, presumably to make the dry melodeon sound resemble a cello sound somewhat. But I think it is just a little bit overdone.

But the overall performance is really lovely; I'm quite sure Tony is actually playing and not miming ;). It's a piece I know well and attempt to play myself (on bass clarinet, rather than cello) but I'm tempted to try it on melodeon too.

How can you tell the reverb is an effect and not the natural sound of the venue? My assumption was that it was recorded in a church, or other acoustically similar place. Guess I'm naive. :-[

I was also wondering about the strong reverb that was added to the recording. It has most likely been edited, and not recorded in a church, because the backdrop makes it seem like a small place and the lighting seems very direct (as if in a smaller room). No way to tell for sure though, so we might as well be wrong.

Artificial reverb or not, he's NOT miming!

Tony Croft has published two books of tunes from the world of classical music arranged for melodeon (though i don't think that Bach is in either of them).

It is mostly speculation on my part, that it is a post-recording effect.
However, if you look at some of Tony's other Youtube recordings in what appears to be the same venue and set-up, the result is much more like a natural melodeon sound, i.e. a big reverb effect has not been applied to those pieces. E.g:

Does sound church like whether achieved thru effects or a natural setting.  I think this performance is just amazing and displays a mastery of the instrument that not all will achieve in this lifetime.  Sending the link to my friend who os a professional cellost for his thoughts, though I can almost hear him saying that I need to learn this one, which I don’t.

I can only hear excuses. ;) Keep on practising and maybe some day you'll be able to! (:)

He is famous for telling me “not with THAT attitude”when I say a tune is too difficult and I cannot learn it.  Still, this one needs more than practice- with all that is going on in it I would need to complete some kind of memory training course just to get through the first minute!

I suppose if anyone should try this, I should. As a cellist, I already have the piece in my memory. One challenge (of many!) is dealing with the notes that are out of range and missing accidentals on a melodeon.

I love that. The OP post was technically interesting but I found this truly beautiful music.

Well yes, but he had a whole invisible string orchestra accompanying him, and he's playing a simple slow melody. Very nicely, but there's not a great technical challenge.

You're so right (:). But I do love slow simple and musical. And it was natural reverb.

I somehow managed to miss this thread at the time. There is a JS Bach piece in the first book, Minuet in G, and it's very approachable!

Yes, but you misread my post (admittedly ambiguous) : I meant not THAT Bach, meaning the piece linked in the original post, which is the prelude to the first cello suite in G.

Also that minuet, once attributed to Bach, is now widely held to be by Petzold, but that's another argument altogether.

I took it that 'not THAT Bach' meant not JS himself rather than the piece of music, not excluding CPE Bach or even P.D.Q. Bach. Rumour has it that his wife wrote the cello suites anyway.  >:E
