Ostindiens velkomet
« on: May 04, 2018, 11:34:52 AM »

Found this Danish tune recently on Folktunefinder (whilst looking for something else - easily distracted) and liked it so I thought I'd post it here. I would like to know more about it if anyone has information - is the East Indian a ship? Does it commemorate the launch? Is it something else entirely?

Nice.
Could it be The Honourable East India Company?

This is indeed a Danish piece, a Sønderhoning to be precise.  Sønderho is the southern of the two villages on the island of Fanø off the west coast of Jylland and the port of Rødby.  The Sønderhoning dance steps are a promenade in duple meter and a 3-step turn done to the same meter but progressing in a 1-2 / 3-1 / 2-3 manner over the promenade beat as seen (dimly) here:

The foremost practitioners of this tradition are the musicians of Jæ' Sweevers.  You can find their unique style/tunes on YouTube and possibly Spotify.  I'll check for links.

Yes, the Danes are seafaring folk.

Edit:  Here's a link to the tune as played by Jæ' Sweevers.  The entire original album can be accessed by following the link.  Note the pace and tempo dynamics of the original form...as well as the correct title.

Grateful thanks for this information Dick. First link really interesting; the other two not available - maybe an international thing. I suspect that the Danes have a wealth of tunes largely untapped in the UK; hopefully this will be remedied in the near future.

Try Spotify.  The album is there for me, but I'm in Duluth, MN, USA.  FWIW, I have a copy of the original on vinyl.

The fiddler is the same, but the original pianist/singer passed away a number of years ago.

Thanks for posting that. I enjoyed it very much.

(my grandfather emigrated from Denmark to Iowa in 1903)

I was born and raised about 45 miles ENE of Elkhorn, IA, a veeeerry Danish town with a working windmill brought in pieces from Denmark and re-assembled in the town.  I used to play for their Danish Days festival, a 3 day celebration in July.  They also have built the Danish Immigrant Museum there.

Noted Iowa fiddler Dwight Lamb from Onawa on the Missouri river side of the state also played one-row accordion learned from his grandfather.  Here's a clip of him playing with two young Danish musicians, fiddler Kristian Bugge and accordionist Mette Katherine Jensen.  There are a good number of videos easily searchable on YouTube.
