Fettled my first box
« on: May 10, 2018, 11:48:00 AM »

This box started out as a Double Ray Black Dot:

-Removed the celluloid and finished the casework.
-Fitted all new hardware and straps
-Replaced the grill cloth
-Retaped the bellows
-Replaced all buttons (including air button) with black pearloid Hohner Corona buttons.
-Bushed the bass buttons.
-Felted the bass pallets
-Fitted a new fingerboard and adjusted action.
-Fitted new A Mano treble reed blocks that I had setup by Martin Quinn

It now plays like a dream. Start to finish, I loved every minute of it! I would however avoid taping the bellows in the future. Very tedious and time consuming work! A big thanks goes out to Lester, Theo, and many other posts I had referenced here on Melnet.

Where did you source the fingerboard?

That looks amazing!  How much did it cost you in bits to do that if you don't mind me asking?

Looks fantastic, it would be great to hear how it sounds. Here is a video of a young someone playing a similar stripped down Hohner ( her first box maybe?). Looks like someone has applied a little more lacquer than is on yours though!

I'm guessing the a mano reeds will be a different sound.

I too would love to hear how it sounds, though I am still waiting to hear how the box the guy made out of wine boxes sounds....

I've seen plenty of stripped-down ones over the years, but never one with such a light finish - it looks well!

Here is a video of a young someone playing a similar stripped down Hohner ( her first box maybe?).

Not her first box anyway - she was playing a big, red Paolo Soprani (with three of the four reeds taped off) when I first saw her: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7TVNo4dCW0&feature=youtu.be

Then she had several Hohners, before getting her first two Castagnaris off me in the early '90s.

I think the first stripped-down Hohner I saw belonged to my late friend Eilín Ní Riordáin, though it still has its red celluloid (and grille) in this clip (the only one I can find of her now) from the '70s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vq5SxW4jZy4

Not to go too far off topic, here's more of her lovely music on a (pre-stripped?) red Hohner:

Ah, thanks Paul!

In fact it seems that may be the same red D/D# one she's playing in the older clip, only with the grille off it, whilst it looks like the stripped C#/D one I usually saw her with is on the floor, to the right of her, only with the grille on it? ???

I used to get taken sailing on a gleoiteog out of the Sean Ceibh (old harbour) in Spiddal by Eilín, and Bruce Du Ve, in the old days.

Wow! Fantastic playing in that last one, but the music was the only thing I could understand from her....
