Alessandro Zizi
« on: June 01, 2018, 08:22:00 PM »

I came across this video on You Tube today and I would love to learn the tune, which I find very beautiful. I don't know anything about it but something about it seems familiar. Does anyone recognise it?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhjxqcpk_aY&list=RDMMdhjxqcpk_aY&start_radio=1

I guess it wouldn't be difficult to learn it by ear, except that he is playing a F/Bb instrument and I play a G/C. How does one get around that? Any help or guidance would be gratefully received !

Deceptively simple!  It would be easy to learn the notes, but to play such a simple slow tune and make it musical is not easy.

If you play it the same way on a C/G it will come out a tone higher. I guess if you get the tune into your memory first you should be able to work out how to play it. But as Theo says, there's a lot of skill there (especially bellows control) making it sound so good musically.

Delightful. Next on my learning list but I'm not sure how it would go down at a session!

Mind you I often have a stab at lovely tunes like this but then end up not playing them because I'm disappointed that my agricultural style doesn't do it justice.

You are the only one who thinks that Martin.

If anyone can do it, Martin, you can!

The dynamics of this playing are extraordinary. Is it the instrument or the artist?

I'd say a bit of the former and a lot of the latter. Great control.

I have roughly worked out the first part of this gorgeous tune. Difficult but not impossible and yes of course, it is all about the dynamics and phrasing but that is all about listening.
The first thing I have noticed, is that it just doesn't sound right, because I am playing a 2 voice box and the original is played on a 3 voice. Therefore, my first attempts are sounding a bit thin and lacking fullness and character. I believe the original is recorded with a Castagnari Trilly F/Bb, while I am playing a Laura G/C.
I would love to hear you playing it Martin, I think it would be stunning!

This is great stuff!  In my dotage I'm still trying to work out what the dynamics of the button accordion are all about, but I'm not sure they are all that difficult, they're just unfamiliar to players like me brought up on the needs of 'plinky-plonky' dance music.   My feeling is that it does mainly depend on the player, but you also need the right box, where reeds produce a subtle, rather than 'all-on, or all-off' approach.  I've found that producing these effects is mainly a matter of:  first, wanting to;  and second, practising the necessary techniques sensitively.  I sometimes feel that if we all actually start believing that the button accordion is a highly expressive instrument, it will magically become one!

I finally got around to learning this lovely tune. Needs smoothing out but after an evening's toil I needed to get it it recorded.

Bravo, Martin!!!

I'm sure that if you were in the studio with the same microphones and processing in post there would be little difference from the original.  There's a fair bit of production going on with the little fades at the ends of the phrases and "air management" can take some time to get comfortable as we all know.

Thanks Dick. It's a real challenge to replicate Alessandro's fluidity.

I've tried a lot of different fluids and settled on either single malt scotch or Slivovitz, but my favorite fluid-ditty is...
