Flattening the highest note a great deal
« on: June 17, 2018, 05:28:16 AM »

My new B/C doesn't have the G/D button at the top of the range that you find on a 23 note box (Trichord et al), but the highest note on the B row is F#/C# - is it possible to flatten this little guy down to D/C#?  That's d'''/c#''' in case anyone's confused - the squeakiest note on the box.  I play a good few tunes that go up to d''' so would like to have this note on tap, and am curious if I can just dump a kilogram of solder onto the tongues (it's MM), or whether I'm just going to ruin the reed.

I’ve just done exactly this modification to a MMM Paolo Soprani.  I weighted the reed tips with solder and tuned them to match the rest of the box.  The amount of solder required looks quite small.  I can’t detect any difference in tone or response. The owner of the box is well know Irish style pro player.

Can someone explain - is the idea of this to extend the range of the C row? or what? I'm not too good on theory..

This mod is to have a d to complete the high octave  on a b/c accordion on the push

It's the reason the mod's done.  It fills a gap on a 21 key B/C keyboard at the top end of any scale that uses D natural.

Yes, with a 23 note box you have this g'''/d''' button at the top of the C row to supply this note, but with a 21 note box like mine it's missing.  Retuning the f#'''/c#''' on the B row to d'''/c'''  provides it - you pull for c#''' and then press for d'''.  I'm glad this is feasible!
