Good morning Melnet folk.
I would like to buy a study to lean how to play my one row, but Google isn't helping to find one.
If you know of a good book that I can order please post the contact information.
Thank you , Cam
P.S. I am an absolute novice.

I don't think I've ever seen a book specifically for a one row (that's not to say there isn't one) but John Kirkpatrick uses a one row 4 stop quite a lot in his melodeon tutorial DVD. Whereabouts in the world are you as there may be a member of the forum that can help you? Also check out the forum's List of Melodeon Teachers, some give lessons in person and on Skype. Welcome to the forum!

The John Kirkpatrick DVD is at the bottom of this page.

Edited to add the DVD link.

What Pete says. JKs videos are good for what you want and for two row instruments as well.

Good to see you here. As a self-acknowledged novice you may find out that what you wish for changes as you gain experience. Are you sure that a one row is what you want to play?

Thanks for that, Lester! I love Tufty's safety pin spring repairs. ;D

I'm fixing a H113 in D. One reed isn't sounding but I working on it.

I have a Hohner Presswood in A/D, but several notes do not sound. It needs valves.

I have a One row four stop on the way from a charity auction, but i do not know which key it is in yet.

I sold my semitone box. I like a wider voice.

Thank you Pete and Lester.

I live in Tacoma Washington. I think the one row could work as I have another 113 in G. I like folk music, and my friends dance, and play harp.

Roger Watson’s Handbook for Melodeon starts off dealing with single row instruments, and doesn’t get on to two rows until about halfway through.

Frank Sears just released a two-volume book for one-rows, with emphasis on québécois repertoire. Don't know if it's translated in English though.

Roger Watsons book isn't fantastic (MO) but you can find used copies on Amazon for US$10, can't go wrong there.  Don't see why any of the 2-row books (Rennie, Mally, George, etc.) would not be good for a start.

Would not recommend Mall's book as it goes in for a lot of cross row stuff which is hard on a one row.

You need two melodeons and four arms, complete with hands.

Edit: More seriously, different techniques. Horses for courses.

Good point, thank you Lester.  I guess that is one reason why I have liked it.  I feel like it really helped me play "the way you are supposed to".  I.e.  combination of push/pull, cross row, etc.  Bad idea for 1-row player, obviously.

There is no English version and there is no need, there is almost no text, an example.
These music books are published in France by Jean-Michel Corgeron, www.franchesconnexions.com

Thanks, donacc. I realise this is probably more a tune book than a tutor book, don't know which one exactly Cam Button wanted?

I was initially surprised that Jean-Michel felt it necessary to transpose the tunes into C and attached the tablature to the C setting. I suppose that this was to help G/C players in France play the tunes on the C row, but it might be confusing for people in the rest of the world.

Another curiosity: in the video for Gigue du père Mathias Frank starts the first part using finger 3 but when he gets to the repeat he is using finger 4 for the same passage. In the tablature a repeat sign is used, so you have the curious situation of finger 4 being indicated on the last note in the first time ending, sending the reader back to the start with finger 3 (on the same button), which is awkward and not what the tutor is doing (both times through the tune). Makes you wonder about the wisdom of telling people not only which button to press but which finger to do it with.

Anyway. Frank is a wonderful player, on the 3-row as well.
