Franglo layout and Harmonikas reeds
« on: July 29, 2018, 07:53:36 AM »

Does anyone know the layout of Emmanuel Pariselle's Dipper Franglo instrument? I’m curious and have searched here where it gets mentioned quite a bit, and on concertina.net where it doesn’t get mentioned much.
Secondly...has anyone tried the Harmonikas concertina reeds?

The layout is the same as Emmanuel’s 2.5 row melodeon layout,

Nope. Laid out the same as a melodeon, treble on the right and bass and chords on the left

The whole point of the Franglo concept is that it has the same layout as a melodeon on both sides but in a concertina shaped package and with concertina reeds.   It is single voice on the right, basses are single reeds, but the left hand chords have two reeds - tonic and fifth.

Perhaps a couple of pictures might be useful for us few with poor imaginations?

A picture wouldn't help a lot - it looks just like a large-ish anglo concertina, on both ends.

Here's Emmanuel playing it.

Thanks for that, Anahata. But, bearing in mind that it has the, "same layout as a melodeon on both sides", I'm still confused. Is it configured 10 on the right and 8 on the left? Or maybe 21 and 8, or what?

8:34 into this video gives a good look at the right hand end of the Franglo at an oblique angle. It looks to me like it has two and a half rows of buttons set in a slight arc which makes it look a little like one end of a proper anglo.

Treble will be 10/9/6 and the bass 14

Here is the D/G version of Emmanuel's Layout

They were making "Club Model" Bandonikas in Germany in the 1930s, using Bandoneon/Chemnitzer concertina construction methods. The Franglo is a very similar concept, but built like an English-made concertina...

It also gives you great seperation between what the two ends of a Franglo do...

I've played both Emmanuel's, and Colin Dipper's franglos and they were …very intuiitive.

Left ends were bass chord, with the latter in 1+5 mode. Again the core "8" was intuitive. 12, 14 and 18 bass layouts are always idiosyncratic

I ordered one 15 years back, but it'll never come. If anyone has one they don't play, please PM me 😀

I think we can safely assume that Colin's not making any more of these, but how about Jake at Wolverton Concertinas? I have been considering asking him if he'd make one - I expect the R&D would be a bit much to expect him to do for one instrument, but how many of us would be interested if he might consider making a batch?

The essence of the Franglo concept is that it uses traditional concertina design principles, especially the reeds.  So far Jake only makes hybrids with accordion reeds.  Apart from the sound being different from the exquisite reeds that Colin makes I think accordion reeds would make the whole package much larger.

I've already discussed and he was open to the idea. So that's two takers (:)

He was talking about doing his own reeds a bit earlier in the year; he's knows the Dippers well so has a decent chance of being able to do it I'd say. When I see him next I'll ask him how he's getting on...

Otherwise, if you fancy trying out the concept, you could always try a Club Model Bandonika - they often crop up on eBay, though this one (which seems to be the only one at the moment) seems rather expensive... :(
