I've had mould develop in the past Nick, but only when the stuff has been thin and doesn't skin and solidify like toffee when cold, I wondered if it didn't get over some sort of 'pasteurisation' temperature which a thicker brew, over the heat for a long period, would kill the spores or something like.

My late organ building pal moved more to the cold hide glue as the years passed and never gave any impression that it was second best compared to the hot stuff

Rog,

I have a real glue pot and you are welcome to it. I think I can date it to about 1900 AD
It’s yours when you visit.
Brilliant Nick...thanks. I am looking forward to using it...

As students at the Newark School of Violin Making (fantastic place) we were not allowed to use anything except hide glue. Not just because of tradition though that is important but because it it reversible. You can take a fiddle apart to repair of adjust whilst building, or in it’s future life.Just the careful application of warm water and a thin blade (and an anxious expression).  This is a major advantage but  I don’t know if liquid hide glue offers the same benefit.

Liquid hide glue can also be released with moisture and warmth.  Fish glue is also reversible in the same way.

I have a specific job where hide glue is obviously the right way to go. A couple of keys on a Chemnitzer concertina were glued in the wrong place and (thinks I, having removed them) I really don't want to be using a modern irreversible glue on this.

The other advantage of using hide glue in this situation is that it will bond well even if there are traces of the old hide glue in the surface of the wood.

Don’t forget there is also rabbit glue which is allegedly even stronger. The beauty of pearl glue is that it’s a brilliant alrounder.
For books of age and value we always use hide, but on the spine (back of book) we add some Gelatine for flexibility.

I believe rabbit glue is well thought of for fine leather work.

Hide glue is of course popular for invisible joints.

Just a thought from a glue novice; has anyone tried to fashion these "pearls" of hide glue into sticks for a glue gun? I haven't used either, but it sounds like an ideal marriage. (Or should that read civil partnership?)

I think a glue gun might be a tad over-warm for their liking.

No way because pearl glue needs plenty of water. Certainly a glue pot his needed.

No Malcolm, paste is always used for leather. Any other glue would be terrible.

"Titebond  Hide glue  is fantasic -  use it direct from bottle. "

Titebond liquid hide glue is N O T hide glue. It is tite bond with a colorant.

It's utter garbage. No redeeming features.

Use fish glue or real hide glue or real titlebond.

I have since used the glue pot Nick gave me, with ancient glue and brush. Half filled the outer pot with water and heated on stove and added hot water to the solid glue to get it to a glue like consistency . Have to say it is *amazing* stuff...super sticky and then sets rock hard. I am a convert.

Febreze will not get the smell of it out of bellows Roger - although a few Wills Woodbine 'josticks' will help mask it  ;)

(I would do the asbestos undies and running bit but as I've broken the bottom off my tibia (the medial maleolus) am hobbling at restricted velocity until the local anklewrights can knock some hoss shoe nails and an old bit of tin over it and finally turn me into a man of steel (or titanium if Screwfix are having a special offer)

Actually Richard, pearl glue doesn’t smell. The glue I gave Roger I originally made up about 20 years ago!! So it certainly lasts.
Hope the Tibia mends soon.

The stuff I inherited from my grandfather does Nick (when melted from pearls rather than aged in a pot) - must be well over 60 yrs old so maybe not so refined back then or a different variety of glue ? - it certainly works well, from three beds through various drawers and tables to some nice fretwork he did, nothing with a failed joint so far.

I rather liked Edward's idea of it in stick form for hot melt guns, that would be convenient.

Interesting to see Melodeon's assertion that it is coloured Titebond and not hide glue at all, would explain how it can be used cold.

I'm told two months post op for the Tibia, I can cope with the hobbling OK but the not driving for no defined reason is sending me stir crazy - fortunately we have some lovely neighbours who are helping out with transport.

Well, I've just tried my sample bottle of Titebond LHG, and it is certainly not just coloured Titebond. It's clear and honey-coloured, and it runs, smells and behaves exactly like traditional hot hide glue. It even feels the same when you get it on your fingers - nothing at all like ordinary Titebond. I've used it to reface a set of pallets; they're currently drying, and I'll report back in due course.
